Everfit Physiotherapy

Everfit Physiotherapy My mission is to help people get back to what they love doing following an injury. I promote total wellness with functional exercises.

If NIGGLING INJURIES or INEFFICIENT MUSCLE FUNCTION are holding you back please get in touch for a chat about how I can help you get started to redefine your potential, and continue to motivate you towards a better all around you. I graduated from Otago University in 1997 and started my physio career working through the various specialties at Wanganui hospital. After returning from my two year O.E working in the U.K (based in community centres in Glasgow and Newcastle) I started work at the Rehab Physio Centre in 2002 before buying the business in 2016 and re-branding to EVERFIT to encompass my ethos. I have a real return to function focus and relish returning clients back to work and life activities. I have sporting interests outside of work with past competition at an international age group level in triathlon (including the Hawaiian Ironman), coaching endurance athletes, writing wellness articles for magazines, and taking Les Mills RPM classes. I enjoy working with physiotherapy clients ranging from the sporting elite to the chronic pain sufferer who has difficulty walking to the letter box. Many complementary treatment strategies exist between these two diverse groups. My aim is to focus on building a relationship which allows me to better understand the client’s context/background, and encourage progress in such a way that the client achieves insight and becomes the motivating force for change. I don't offer a short term fix, I educate to ensure long term wellness.

The main criticism of Functional Medicine is the lack of evidence. There isn’t a lot of money to be made out of eating vegetables, drinking water, getting enough sleep, yoga, breath work, and decreasing alcohol.

The new paper published in BMJ shows how a comprehensive Functional Medicine approach delivered in small groups creates better outcomes at lower costs. This is the holy grail of medicine today - a way to provide better value for all.

Janice, in this before and after picture, shows the power of this model to reverse chronic disease (in her case type 2 diabetes, heart failure, high blood pressure and more). This is the future of health care!

Eating a plant based whole food diet should be mainstream medical advice for patients with coronary artery disease. It is the biggest killer of NZers.

“Can’t reverse arterial plaque? Bah humbug. 4 years in my clinic and CIMT 19 yrs younger. See it all the time. Integrative cardiology. Plant based plus.” Dr. Joel Khan (preventative Cardiologist & clinical professor of medicine at Wayne State University School of Medicine)

Here is just some of what’s going to be covered in the VIDEO INTERVIEWS:
*The benefits of a whole food plant-based diet in reversing and preventing heart disease
*Importance of healing gut dysfunction as an initial step to healing chronic inflammation
*How dairy and gluten can wreak havoc on your immune system and lead to digestive issues
*The connection with anxiety and physical pain and how anxiety is a physiological illness.
*Cancer and nutrition, the benefits of a whole food plant based diet during and after chemotherapy
*Optimal aging, nourishing your cells from the inside out
*Cooking for autoimmune disease
*Managing pain and insomnia with non pharmacy options

Wednesday Wellness - ENERGY series

Trying to push through fatigue is counter productive. After a butterfly emerges from it's chrysalis it has to rest and allow it's wings to dry before it can fly. Sometimes you have to take a step back and give your system time to regroup.

"Mounting fatigue will prevent you from reaching potential, and being the person you are supposed to become"

Conventional medicine doesn't have much to offer people with fatigue. Fatigue is multifactorial in nature and it's imperative to know individuals well to make meaningful recommendations - there is no 'silver bullet' testing. Blood tests are inconclusive when it comes to chronic fatigue (In a recent journal article it is stated that blood tests will only effect treatment strategies in 5% of patients, in only 5% of cases blood tests show ANYTHING useful that effects recommendations - American Journal of Family Physician) There is no quick cure - the conventional medical model treat's (or in some cases masks) symptoms. The options are usually exercise (with little direction to personalise), anti-depressants, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), and stimulant medications.

Holistic medicine doesn't offer much either. The thinking has centered around "adrenal fatigue" where adrenal glands and cortisol are central players in fatigue. The research shows that low cortisol or poor cortisol function is not the cause of fatigue. Since 1995 there has been 59 studies on this topic. 11 of these studies showed "slightly higher cortisol levels" in subjects with fatigue syndromes compared to a normal healthy group. 15 studies of the 59 showed "slightly lower cortisol levels". The majority of studies showed no difference. The symptoms are not caused by cortisol levels (Flavio A Cadegiani et al. BMC Endocr Disord. 2016 PMID : 27852255).

"Adrenal fatigue " is not a real medical condition. There are no scientific facts to support the theory that long-term mental, emotional, or physical stress drains the adrenal glands and causes many common symptoms." The Endocrine Society (Hormone specialists)

So what does the latest science suggest is the cause of longstanding fatigue? Keep an eye on future Wednesday wellness posts

Dear EVERFIT team,

Wishing you all the very best as we all head into 2021. I am looking forward to working with you all and helping move you towards the best version of you with information, and habit formation education.

I've recently completed a course on ENERGY. Most of my clients - especially those over 40 years discuss lack of energy and feeling fatigued. I have some new information to help with that. I will also go a bit deeper this year on HOW TO FORM HABITS more effectively.

Our family have been engaging in bush walks, river dips, and just relaxing. I managed to run the 3000m at the Twilight meet and even thou I hadn't been able to run for almost 10 months this year still managed 10min 20sec (only 13sec away from 2019 when I was running consistently). I put this down to training around the injury - cross training with cycling, swimming, and doubling down on yoga, and core work.

Thank you ALL for your support over 2020. I love working with you - and appreciate your honesty and working on more than just simple training with me. I really enjoy catching up with you all (face to face and FaceTime). If anyone would like a copy of my book 'Holistic Human' I have more copies in stock. I will be working Mon, Wed, and Fri during January so I can spend time with the kids while Coral does some GP work.
