Hearth and Soul NZ

Hearth and Soul NZ A beautiful heart and earth based space for massage, Soul Chats, workshops and more. Natasha has run yoga studios in Palmerston North since 2006.

The Circle Gatherings include yoga, rest, journeying, cacao, ceremonies and more. In 2023 she moved home to Napier and began to create gatherings. These can be two hours long in a community hall, all the way through to residential retreats. Natasha curates spaces, making them feel like you're in a warm home, with a favourite aunt, sharing a cup of tea. On Wednesday nights, at 6.30NZ time, she transports you live to her dining room for an open online yoga class. You can also catch these in the video section. There's a suggested contribution of $6. Since 199, Natasha has also worked with the tarot, 78 pieces of cardboard she will remind you with equal reverence and mirth. From online readings to in-person, workshops to study courses, she loves to share the wisdom and quirky humour of the cards and their stories. To book, to host, to inquire, drop her a message here.

Ramble...
Curiosity is fabulous. I don't mean the research something online kind. I mean the who are you and what do you think and why kind. I mean the picking up rocks and shells and driftwood kind. I mean the oooh, what's that kind.

Curiosity keeps us from stale, judgy states of being. It's refreshing to be around. It tends to playfulness and even being a little silly.

May I suggest cultivating curiosity, as a balm for our interesting times.

A little Tuesday ramble about rest and what's coming up in the Hearth and Soul calendar...

This week the Friday 9am Slow Flow and 10am Yin are all about exploring breath and movement, subtle versions of both. Think lots of softening into, exhales and pauses.

I'm also up front at 10am Saturday and next week, on November 8, there's Slow Flow at 10 and Yoga Nidra returns at 11am. A beautiful dive into rest.

There's 3 beautiful spaces left for Taking Yoga Deeper next year. If you need a chat about it all, I'm happy to drink tea and talk you through 13 luscious weekends of yoga.

Here at Hearth and Soul there's some space for massages and Soul Chats Friday and Saturday afternoon. Come and soak - Monty snuggles always available.

Next week it's tarot night too - 6-8pm, Cacao and plenty of woo.

A wee ramble
Rest. There I am in the image, Monty at my feet, stopped with coffee and a book. My mind was whirling here and there so I took a break in another world, a slow tactile book-in-hand world. Rest: Telling my charged up nervous system that there really isn't a hungry lion about to try and eat us. Easing out of anxiety, I slowly relax.

You would think a yoga teacher wouldn't be anxious but that's why yoga is a practice. It takes maintenance on the daily to stay centred and calm. It's not always something that comes naturally. The transition into elderhood, the wild ride of perimenopause, definitely adds a challenge to the practice.

Rest becomes critical, and that much harder.

Yet, I'm a much more effective person when I'm rested. Part of the last few years has been about embracing my introvert self who recharges alone, with craft, a podcast, a book, the garden. I can only be the heart of Hearth and Soul if I take this time.

I've been talking to some mummas lately, struggling to find those moments. Yoga before everyone gets up. A quiet moment in the car on the way to pick-ups. It can feel like snatching time, which isn't a restful way to do it. It's about those five minutes, twenty minutes, even two or three breaths, being deep pauses. Luscious with intention. Expansive.

Rest, softening in any moment you can.

Monty's even had a bath in readiness.

If you haven't been to a long weekend special, they're a bit delicious. Crystal singing bowls and sinking into your body, slow Yin poses, then gently up to Slow Flow before heading back to the singing bowls to let it all soak in.

The ramble...
Morning light in the sanctuary as huge life changes settle into place. I am so much better at caring for myself in these shifts now - soft light, quiet times, the fridge full of easy to create meals, and permission to just have toast. The gentle push out the door to nourishing group gatherings - a Lakshmi celebration last night for Diwali. A 'late' social media update, and even a gentle 'no' to some work that won't nourish my soul.

So I guess the ramble is about those moments where we gently tuck a blanket around ourselves, make a pot of tea and be kind. The moments we ask our wise elder self to help with the shopping, and to nudge us gently forward. Moments where we know we have our own back.

Be kind - to you.

This week...
Friday is a fabulous 90 minute yoga and there's one spot left.
Monday is another fabulous 90 minute yoga, celebrating the public holiday. 9.30-11am with singing bowls and yummy Yin into Slow Flow. $25 and book on Mind Body.

And...Taking Yoga Deeper is 70% full so if you've been thinking about a year long yoga deep dive, for 2026, nows the time to nab a mat.

I'm fabulously booked out for Soul Chats and massage so diaries out for next week. I can squish a couple of New Moon Readings in if you need some insights.

Have a fabulous week crew.
And be gentle to yourself.

A Monday Ramble and what's on for the week, plus a mini retreat incoming...

Ahiṃsā has been on my mind lately, a concept that underpins yoga and goes to the heart of living a yoga life - but before you think this is about not eating meat, it's not (although it can be). Ahiṃsā is about non-violence, and it starts in our heart and mind and then spills out into the way we live. That's what can make it such a transformative practice.

We hear lots about self-love and self-care and about how our vibe attracts our life: It's pretty much New Age 101. Ahiṃsā is the ancient version - the idea that if you were in a state of ahiṃsā, you could safely meditate for hours and nothing would bother you in nature because you were not perceived as a threat or prey. Get that wrong in the land of tigers and things could go very awry.

So how does ahiṃsā translate in 2025? It's the antidote to a world where violence towards self and out into the world is more the norm. It won't repel the tigers, but it is something beautiful to be around, to maintain, to work on and with as an energy. It's a nicer way to be in the world, and I think the world needs nice, kind, and gentle.

Yoga this week...

6.30 Slow Flow
Friday

Saturday

There's another info session about Taking Yoga Deeper Monday at 7.30pm. If you can't make it, I'm happy to do a coffee/chai chat to answer any questions.

Mini Retreat - November 9 - Napier
Yoga, Cacao, sound journey, lunch, tarot and woo
$111

There's Soul Chat and massage spaces Wednesday morning and Friday afternoon with a rare Saturday afternoon also available.

Be gentle, to yourself. Ahiṃsā takes the idea of emotional regulation and dives deep into our being, asking us to be in alignment with our values in every facet of our lives. It's not a measuring stick, but a moment by moment deep breath into peace.

Two questions this week...

What if I can't make an info session?
I'm happy to meet for coffee or you can pop questions through to Amy and I'll answer them

What kind of work load is there between weekends?
As much as you like.
The weekly Wednesday email features all sorts of juiciness and an invitation for questions. There's also a link to video content forming a library for you for after the course.
Or, you can take the weekends as mini retreats, delicious, full, wonderful dives into yoga. And then rest until the next one.

Healing Through Tarot was my first ever business name back in 1995 and that little blue notebook of tarot notes is still in use today. The cards tell such powerful stories of stepping forward, of dealing with the huge life questions, and the little but meaningful ones too. They take us into our underworld and then sit us in patches of sunshine to integrate and celebrate. I'm still fascinated by them..

Incoming is a day retreat. The kind where you sink into yoga, drink some cacao, take a sound journey, eat a beautiful lunch and then spend the afternoon at play in the cards and their stories. We finish with another sound journey. The little Hearth and Soul space in town is still waiting to find its new person so I'm going to gather us there. There's room for 4 beautiful souls for the day. We start at 10 to give you some morning snooze time, and finish at 4. The cost - let's play with sacred numbers while we're there - $111.

Full Moon Readings
This week sees a full moon so I'm sitting with the cards and doing those kick butt 20 minute sessions to drop on your inbox. Check your Around the Hearth email for the end of year special too.

In-person
There's a couple of spaces on Friday afternoon if you'd like a massage or Soul Chat or both.

And a ramble...
I'm not sure who needs to hear this, really let it sink in hear this, but you belong. You matter. Monty, the wonderful yoga, massage and Soul Chat companion dog, would wag his tail and sit on your feet and invite you to sink your fingers into his curls. He'd lift his chin and look at you with those big puppy dog eyes that say, don't stop.

Sometimes it's the big version of this we need; the intervention at the edge of the precipice. Other times, it's the little reminder, the daily, moment by moment version. Either way, this is it. The you matter, you belong.

I have a couple of intertwined house plants, and yes, the Hearth and Soul cottage is a jungle inside, so more than these two, and last night I looked up and thought, mmmm, one looks thirsty. Chances are, they both are. This morning I climbed up on the stool to water them and they were thirsty. They're my first true sign that the weather is warming. They're also a reminder that I matter. The little ecosystem that exists inside my home is dependent on me. I know if you routinely kill off your house plants, this might just add to the burden in your brain - or it could be the way to daily recognise belonging and mattering. Too often we give too much weight to belonging in the human world which can be fickle and downright mean. The natural world helps us recognize belonging simply by existing, and watering.

Our Story

The Circle is a boutique yoga studio in the heart of George Street that offers classes, courses and workshops in yoga, meditation, sacred earth practises and tarot. There is a theme of welcoming every body onto the mat (gap between the words intentional). Both Dan and I have become increasingly concerned about the way that yoga and yoga bodies are represented both on and off the mat and we want to constantly make sure that we are welcoming you and your experience to The Circle, not our expectation and ideas. You might notice a difference in the way we talk about your body, your choices in class and even yoga itself. Yoga really is for every body.

I’m Nat, and I used to run Zing Studio and have taught yoga since 2005. It’s my writing you see on The Circle page. I have also read tarot cards since 1993, staying away from fortune telling and working instead with the cards as insights into where life is right now. Known for being good when you need a kick in the butt, I can help plan and then help bust through the barriers to that plan. For those interested in learning more about the cards and themselves, I offer an online, interactive tarot course. Dan has worked alongside me since 2007, teaching yoga and retreats. He is a massage therapist, gifted at getting into those aches and pains and for those who prefer the gentler touch, he is also a healer.

We team up for satsang online which is a chance to talk about life events, world events, all through a yoga filter. This can go in all sorts of directions, circling back to the yoga teachings with a very diverse view of what they are and how we might experience them.

Our up to date timetable is up the front of the page and many of our classes now livestream on Facebook. There is quite a library so have a play. Booking for our in person classes is essential as many classes will be full so email jayadevi@matajiyogaschool.com or text Nat on 027 6282 547
