We spent an afternoon arranging fresh flowers from our garden into blocks of oasis. The lady who did this arrangement really enjoyed it. Her husband shared with us that her mother used to enjoy flower arranging as well.

We took our new van for a spin on Thursday. We headed out past the airport, through Westshore and Bay View, past the Whirinaki Pulp Mill to the beach at Whirinaki. We had paddocks of sheep on one side and the ocean on the other. The weather wasn’t the best but we had a great time!

We recently marked National Awareness Week for Diversional and Recreational Therapy. This year’s theme was He Kākano, He Tipu – From Seed to Growth.

Our activities coordinators plan activities to support our residents’ physical, social and emotional needs. In our home, this can sometimes involve spending time and connecting one on one with a resident, and allowing their personality, mood, and interests to guide our time together. Our activities team’s vital work helps our residents to feel good. It enhances their quality of life by building connection, bringing a sense of belonging and purpose, and helping to keep minds and bodies active.

We have a resident who was a keen fisherman in his heyday. He loves kaimoana from the sea. His son was out fishing on Friday morning, and he brought back some crayfish for his Dad’s lunch. The resident used the hammer and pliers to open the cray like a pro, as he has clearly done this many times before. He ate every morsel with a big grin all over his face.
