We have just been notified that there is a new wave buoy about 1.5nm off Bayview, 39 25.228'S, 176 55.040'E. The old one that had been off Westshore has been removed.

There are also still a number of logs in Hawke Bay, so if you are out boating please keep an eye out for these hazards.

Kia ora folks our busy day started about 7am with a call for assistance from a waka which was sailing to Napier.

After sorting that tasking and as we were tying up, we received a call asking us for assistance in getting a sick fisher off a fishing vessel, 22 nautical miles (approx. 40km) northeast of Napier.

It took us about an hour to arrive at the fishing boat and to take the fisher onboard CK. Our crew provided medical support until we returned to Napier where a Hato Hone, St John crew assessed him and took him to hospital for further treatment. We understand he was released early evening.

Stay safe.

At about 1230 this afternoon we responded to a call for assistance from a boat which was taking on water at Perfume Point (Te Karaka) Their bilge pumps could not keep up, and they were starting to sink.

We tasked two of our crew to take our salvage pump down to the boat and to start pumping it out. Meanwhile the boat crew and some bystanders held the boat steady in the beach shallows.

After we managed to get quite a bit of water out, we made the call to start the tow back to the boat ramp so that we could get the boat out of the water. This meant taking Celia Knowles into quite shallow water.

With our salvage pump running at full revs we were able to recover the boat.

A big thanks to the bystanders for their help and the calm actions of the boat crew, with everyone working together we managed to get the boat out of the water.

Stay safe.

Kia ora folks, just before our regular Sunday training session we received a call for assistance from a vessel that had hit a log and damaged their stern leg so much that they required assistance to return to Napier. Fortunately they had not damaged their boat hull.

We noticed several other logs while we were out undertaking this assist so, please keep an eye out for logs.

After we returned to our Base, we still had time to take a group of trainees out for their swim. The water is still great for swimming.

Stay safe.

Kia ora folks, our busy weekend started early with the release of some more seabirds on Thursday and then a jetski assist that evening. On Saturday we were a support boat at the Napier Port Swim and as that finished up, we received a call from a vessel with engine issues. Fortunately, they were able to restart their engine so instead of undertaking a tow we simply shadowed them back to Napier. Meanwhile, we had a group at the Rescue Helicopter Open Day. This gave us an opportunity to engage with the public outside of the marine environment.

Sunday was equally busy, as we were finishing our regular training session we received a call for assistance from a vessel with electrical issues. While we were enroute to this vessel we fitted in a couple more bird releases. As well as our on-water activities we had a group at the Westshore Emergency Hub Opening day. This was our way of supporting our immediate local community.

Stay safe.

Last evening we received a call for assistance from a small boat with fuel issues just off Pan Pac. The swell certainly made things interesting, although not very big, about 1.5m, the swells were much closer together than we normally experience which made conditions a bit more challenging than usual.

Also, a big thanks to all of the people on shore saw the boat had difficulties and took the time to report it to both Police and Coastguard.

Stay safe.

Kia ora folks, another busy weekend here in Hawke's Bay. On Saturday we assisted a 5m boat that had some engine issues, a quick tow from Pania and we soon had then back in Napier.

On Sunday as well as our regular training session we supported Wildbase Hospital in the release of some white-face storm petrels (Takahikare) and a fairy prion ( Tītī wainui). They had been caught up in the recent storms and some of them had ended up in Pohangina, Manawatu.
Then later in the day we received an urgent callout, initially for a dog that had been swept out to sea. The callout was then upgraded after it was reported that the owner had swum out to the dog. Fortunately, they both made it ashore unaided and we were stood down.

Stay safe
