Just wanted to clarify the picture of the kayaker below, that is actually someone who paddled out from the shore to assist the kayaker in difficulty. My apologies for not making that clear in the original posting

This afternoon we received an urgent Police call regarding a kayaker who was in the water off Whirinaki. His kayak had become unstable and he could not get back onboard. He was able to alert Police who in turn activated our Coastguard crew.

A very big thanks to the crew of Loaded Dice and the kayaker who paddled out from the shore who also responded and assisted in the recovery process.

The kayaker was returned to our Base where he was checked by a Hato Hone, St John's ambulance crew and after spending a bit of time warming up, he was able to go home.

A quick message from our local Harbourmaster about divers in the Inner Harbour

Dive Hard have been granted a dive permit for tomorrow Thursday. They will be doing bio-security checks on vessels in the inner harbour. Vessels in the area are advised to keep clear of the divers and the Dive Hard safety vessel. Before starting engines check with the dive supervisor that it is safe to do so.

Please take extra care if boating in the area.

We had quite a busy Sunday this Labour Weekend. Our regular 2 hour Sunday morning training session and then in the afternoon 2 assists.

The first one was literally just off the Inner Harbour channel entrance and while we were doing that tasking we received a call for assistance from a vessel that had run into difficulties near Black Reef, Cape Kidnappers. As they didn't have a good position we used 'Mobile Locate' which enables us to send them a text which when they press reply to gives us a much better position.

When we arrived, there was a line of w**d and rocks stopping us from getting close enough to the vessel. To get the situation sorted we worked with our SAR partners Hawke's Bay Surf Life Saving Search and Rescue Team. Then it was a quick tow back to Napier.

Hi all, please take note of the following RĀHUI NOTICE

Te Whanga o Ruawharo (Ahuriri Harbour / Hawke Bay)

Our hearts are heavy following the tragic loss of life that occurred yesterday within the sacred waters of Te Whanga o Ruawharo. We extend our deepest condolences to the bereaved whānau, friends, and the wider community affected by this tragedy.

As a mark of respect for the life lost, and to protect the spiritual and cultural integrity of the area, a rāhui (temporary closure) has been placed by our kaumātua and the Chairs of Mana Ahuriri Trust and Te Taiwhenua o Te Whanganui-ā-Orotū.

The rāhui is in effect from Te Karaka (Perfume Point), extending out to sea Pania Reef including Town Reef down to 3nautical miles west of The Panui Statute on Marine Parade. and Town Reef. The rāhui applies to all recreational and commercial activities, including but not limited to:
• Fishing and the taking of kaimoana

The rāhui has already been cast by our kaumatua and chairs and takes effect immediately (now until 6:00am Friday 24th October) and will remain in place until it is lifted following a whakanoa (cleansing and closure) ceremony. A further public notice will confirm when the rāhui is lifted.

Mana Ahuriri asks all members of the public to respect this rāhui as a gesture of compassion for the loss that has occurred, and to uphold the tapu (sacredness) and mauri (life essence) of the moana.

On behalf of the iwi and hapū of Ahuriri

Early this afternoon we received a call about an overdue vessel which had been heading out to Pania Reef. We located a survivor at about 1455, and a second person was recovered about 1620. Unfortunately, he was deceased. Both were wearing lifejackets and while Police investigate the accident let's

all have empathy for the family and wider whanau and avoid speculation.

Our thoughts are with the whanau at this sad time.

We want to thank our SAR partners who helped in the search, Police SAR squad, Pania and Aramona from Napier Port, Lowe Corp Rescue helo, Napier Sailing Club, Starkeys and the Hawkes Bay Surf callout squad.

A great effort by everyone.

Just after 1200 we received a call from a member of the public about a swimmer clinging to a 200m buoy off Hardinge Rd shouting for help.

While we activated our crew, we also put out a call on vhf channel 62 to see if there were any boats in the area who could assist. There was and they recovered the swimmer a few minutes later

So big thanks to the crew on Squid Ink 11 for recovering the swimmer. The swimmer is well he was just exhausted.

This incident underlines that search and rescue truly is a team effort.

Today we carried out one of our bigger taskings. Early this morning a converted ships lifeboat which was travelling from Napier to Auckland had engine failure off Portland Is. We departed about 0830 and we were alongside them at 1030. After a quick hook up it was the start of a much slower trip back to Napier, we arrived back about 5:30pm. Even though we had a lot of rain, fortunately, the seas remained relatively flat.

Although the straight-line distance to the vessel was about 41 nautical miles (76kms) we had to remain inside the 12-mile limit which meant a longer trip, out of 52 nautical miles (96kms), a total of over 104 nautical miles (193kms). The requirement to remain inside the 12-mike limit is a factor of our skipper's tickets, if lives had been at risk we can and do cross the 12-mile limit. You can see the effect at the end of the video.

We were lucky to see a great variety of sea life, dolphins, seals, a shark as well as numerous birds.

Rounding out a busy weekend for us was our annual search and rescue exercise (sarex) with our sar partners, Hawkes Bay Surf Callout Squad and the Police SAR Squad.

The scenario was a plane crash off Westshore with 4 persons onboard. The video gives you a sense of the planning that goes on in the background which helps guide the on-water teams.

To round off the search component we had a couple of Surf volunteers jump into the water to act as patients. Search and rescue is a team effort and after the exercise it was back to our Base for a debrief and lunch.

Kia ora folks, today we undertook two assists. The first one was a small runabout that had broken down off Awatoto. With the wind building to 25 to 30 knots it made things a bit interesting.

While we were on the tow back to Napier, we received a call about a small boat that appeared to have broken down in the Inner Harbour channel. As we passed them in the channel, they indicated that assistance was required. So once we dropped off the first tow it was a quick trip across the channel for one of our shorter assists.

Then it was back home to finish off cutting the lawns.

Kia ora folks, this morning we received an urgent callout regarding a kayaker being blown out to sea off Awatoto. The person had gone out to recover his kontiki before the wind was due to hit Hawkes Bay.

Unfortunately, while making his way back to shore with his kontiki the wind suddenly increased, and he was unable to make any progress back to the beach.

We were paged at 1040 and Celia Knowles left at 1055, the kayaker was sighted about 1800m offshore at 1110 and a few minutes later we had him onboard, he was ok apart from being cold and exhausted.

We had him back at our Base by 1145 where family were waiting for him.

Kia ora folks, on Sunday we carried out a search and rescue exercise (sarex) with our sar partners, Hawkes Bay Surf Callout Squad. It was a great way to give our newer people a taste of what to expect in our upcoming annual sarex on Sunday 19 Oct. The guys inputting data onto our radar screen were setting it up so that we could monitor everyone's position.

We were fortunate in having an extra Coastguard vessel to help out. After a successful search along Westshore, we then used the opportunity to do some 'victim recovery' and patient transfers using multiple methods.

Then it was a race home!

Kia ora folks, this morning we had an early call for assistance from a vessel which had some engine problems just off South Pania. Good to see the guys were well prepared and that they were all wearing lifejackets and were Coastguard members.

In case you are wondering, our regular vessel, Celia Knowles, has not suddenly sprouted outboards, we are taking the opportunity to do some pre-season work on her, so we have a bailment boat on a temporary basis.

Coastguard membership is something to consider as the days get longer and warmer and more boats start heading out. Just visit our website for details https://www.hawkesbaycoastguard.co.nz/
