Dr Ros Pochin thinks role models are crucial to helping women break through the glass ceiling and explore non-traditional career paths.

“You need to see what you want to be.”

The British-born general surgeon, based in Nelson, in Te Waipounamu (the South Island of Aotearoa New Zealand), says its important to be able to see women in positions of authority and senior roles.

“[It means women can] feel assured that their contribution will be valued in the future.”

Dr Pochin also believes having women “integrated and visible within surgery strengthens the profession and ensures that we reflect the population we represent”.

Diversity means surgeons are better able to connect with their patients and that means better service provision.

“I’m a mother and I’m running around always late because I’m trying to do 50 things at once – and, actually, my patients are just like me.”

In the 27 years since Dr Pochin moved to Aotearoa, she has been a visible and accessible resident of her adopted city. She is also a leader within the surgical profession, being Treasurer of RACS’ Aotearoa New Zealand (AoNZ) National Committee and last year convened the AoNZ ASM.
