Wow it's nearly 2025! I'll be starting the new year with a new program around art and resilience. For those of you who don't know me I'm an art therapist and have been working with children in mental health since my art therapy training began in 2011. I trained in Art Therapy in Canada, and completed my undergraduate degree at Edinburgh College of Art. I've supported children with disability, and cared for young adults with physical injury in my career. I now work with local schools, government agencies and local agencies to support young people facing mental health challenges in Nelson.

I'm a first aider, ACC provider, Gumboot provider, and more, and have lots of professional development in art, psychology, and mental health. I specialise in working with children, and am nuerodivergent myself. If you're looking for mental health support for your children please get in touch.

I've been running art programs at Founders since early 2022 for children aged 5-12yo that incorporates art making and games in the park usually around a theme. Prior to this I was working with Aroha Discovery School at Fairfield House running holiday programs.

Sometimes, when everything gets too overwhelming, I just shut myself off.

I ignore the calls, let the messages sit unread, and retreat to a place where I can just be alone. It’s not about running away from anyone – it’s about giving myself space to breathe. There’s a strange comfort in stepping back from the world, letting myself sit in the quiet, and just feeling whatever I need to feel without explaining it to anyone.

I think we all have days like that – when even the smallest noise feels like too much. So I let myself turn it all down. I take time to sort through my own thoughts, to just sit with what’s weighing on me.

It’s not easy, but sometimes, facing it alone brings a kind of calm that nothing else can. And slowly, piece by piece, I find my way back to myself, a little stronger, a little clearer.
