Let's get to know - Barry!
What is your role at Simplicity Funerals?
Funeral Director, Embalmer, and Manager. I am privileged to support families through every stage of their journey, ensuring their loved one is cared for with dignity and respect. Also very proud to work with some wonderful people at Simplicity, a great team.
How long have you been a funeral director and embalmer?
I have been in the funeral profession for nearly 30 years, and it continues to be a role I feel deeply honoured to carry out.
Why did you choose to become a funeral director and embalmer?
My journey began with an interest in building caskets, as many funeral directors did in the 1980s. While that opportunity didn’t eventuate, I was offered a role as a Funeral Director and I’ve never looked back. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of walking alongside many families during some of their most difficult moments. It is something I approach with humility and care. And along the way, I’ve still been able to create caskets and urns, which keeps me connected to where it all began.
What is the best piece of advice you have received?
When I was about 16, I began an apprenticeship in timber machining. A neighbour of mine shared his own experience he had walked away from his building apprenticeship at a young age and always regretted not finishing it. His advice was simple: finish what you start. That stayed with me, and I’ve carried it throughout my life. Today, I hold four qualifications across different fields, all because I took that advice to heart.
What brings you the most joy in life?
Spending time with my wife Evelyn and our daughters means everything to me. I also enjoy travelling and making the most of time together. On a quieter note, I value simple moments like taking my little black sports car out for a drive, top down, listening to the engine hum and feeling the fresh air. It’s my way of resetting and finding balance.
What is something you enjoy doing that might surprise people?
I enjoy repairing things. Anything from old watches to antique arcade machines. If it’s mechanical and broken, I’m drawn to the challenge. There’s something very satisfying about bringing something back and seeing it work once again.
