Kai Whai Painga

Kai Whai Painga Kai Whai Painga means the nourishment of food, not only through nutrients but emotions as well.

Food is a way of showing love, compassion and spending time with whānau whilst nourishing our bodies.

I recently spoke to the Nelson Mail about why we can’t just blame people for the size of body they live in, and how there are so many other factors such as genetics, colonisation, institutionalised racism, COVID, and trauma which influences a persons body size.

Definitely something for everyone to think about coming off the back of the most privileged sizest bullsh*t that was aired on the this morning! Women like Louise Wallace shouldn’t even be allowed to speak in public due to the damage she has caused today, and the AM show should public ally apologise for even allowing that to be aired!

During working hours I spend my time at Te Piki Oranga as Te Puna Kai Ora. I have the most amazing job and it’s everything I ever dreamed of in a role! I get to write and review healthy policies, take group education sessions, run 1:1 nutrition consults, as well as menu development and kai creation! This month is aka the harvest season so for our board meeting I prepared a beautiful fresh kūmara and chickpea salad with feta courtesy of Tasty Next month is so keep an eye out for what kai I make!

Have you been told that if you lose weight you’ll be healthier?

Well I’m here to tell you that your weight doesn’t dictate how healthy you are! There is lots of research showing that if you have healthy lifestyle behaviours (such as eating 5 serves of fruits and vegetables per day, exercising 3 times a week, and not smoking) then you have the same risks of disease no what your BMI is.

Fad diets and yo-yo dieting can do more harm than good. There is strong evidence showing that people lose the most weight at 6-12 months but then within 2 years have regained most of back. Weight loss can also harm us by promoting disordered eating behaviours, depression and anxiety, memory impairment and weight gain.

If you think you or someone you know can benefit from having a better relationship with food and learning to trust their body, contact me today!

Yesterday I completed the La Leche League Breastfeeding Peer Counselling Programme. This 30-hour training means I’m now able to assist mothers in their breastfeeding journeys including helping with latch and positioning issues, perceived low supply and other concerns that may arise. This support isn’t limited to exclusively breastfeeding mothers either! So if you’re experiencing pain when breastfeeding or wanting to look at expressing breast milk, using donor milk or mixed feeding, flick me an email or a message 🙂 Btw breastfeeding support is FREE!

Last week I had the opportunity to speak to some wonderful mums at the North East Valley Baptist Church all about introducing solids to their babies. There was some great conversations about Puree Feeding vs. Baby Led Weaning, vegan and vegetarian diets for children, and why it's important to introduce your baby to grains.

If you're interested in learning more about complementary feeding flick me a message or an email :)

I spent two days last week at the Māori Health Leadership summit hosted by Te Rau Matatini, and it was a moving and inspirational time! I got the most amazing opportunity to hear from tā Mason Durie about what whānau want from health services. The 10 points are taken from his talk and it really makes you wonder why we’re still having to talk about this and why health services haven’t put Māori at the core. I recommend if anyone ever has the opportunity to listen to him talk to grab it with both hands! Because even for non-Māori his words are powerful!
