A windy but warm day greeted the Carefirst team on Saturday as we ventured to Warea for a morning of akoranga (learning) about the rich and harrowing history of Parihaka, and the ongoing impact of colonisation on both the people and the environment.

We toured the coastal whenua (land) of Warea, learning about its social, economic and agricultural significance for Taranaki iwi, before it was destroyed by British forces during the land wars and the invasion of Parihaka. The impacts of these events continue to be felt today.

Learning about this and its ongoing impact gives us a greater understanding of both the ways in which intergenerational trauma continues to impact the health and wellbeing of our community, and how we can support our community to heal.

We acknowledge local kaitiaki, Tihikura Hohaia for hosting us, sharing his extensive and valuable knowledge, and visions for the future of our wonderful community - ngฤ mihi nui!

๐Ÿ“ฃHow to get the most from your doctor appointment... ๐Ÿ“ฃ

You get 15 minutes at the GP, so how do you make the most of it? Write a list, save up your ailments, do a quick Google beforehand?

Sunday Morning spoke to GP, medical educator and writer Dr Lucy O'Hagan to get the top tips on how you can get the most out of your doctor appointment. The main points Dr O'Hagan identified are:

๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€โš•Don't bring a long list
๐Ÿ‘จโ€โš•Do know what you expect out of the consultation
๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€โš•Do change doctors if they're not working for you
๐Ÿ‘จโ€โš•Do prepare for GPs to ask you lots of questions
๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€โš•Do summarise your visit at the end
๐Ÿ‘จโ€โš•Do bring a friend or whฤnau
๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€โš•Don't forget about other healthcare providers
๐Ÿ‘จโ€โš•Do use online tools

To dive deeper into each of Dr O'Hagan's tips, check out the full interview on our Community News page - https://carefirst.co.nz/community-news

๐Ÿ˜ƒWe couldn't be more proud of our very own Dr Kiyomi Kitagawa for speaking at the recent, inaugural Women's Conference held by the Sisonke Taranaki African Community. This free event was a fantastic celebration of inclusion, diversity and empowerment.

๐Ÿ˜ƒKiyomi said. "When Petunia asked me to speak it was an immediate yes! I saw it as great opportunity to share my knowledge, connect with inspiring wฤhine/women and groups in our community and be inspired by other amazing wฤhine.

I spoke about how to navigate the health system in Aotearoa. What contributes to our health and wellbeing both within, and more importantly, outside the health system. As well as my top tips for getting the most out of GP visits.

A common thread that emerged through the day was that of whanaungatanga/connection to empower wฤhine and in turn, strengthen our community."

๐Ÿ˜ƒIf you missed out on this year's event, be sure to follow the Sisonke Taranaki African Community page for updates on the next event!

Today is Thank Your Cleaner Day and we are paying tribute to the wonderful cleaners from Egmont Cleaning Services and Corporate Cleaning Solutions who do such a wonderful job in our clinics.

Having a clean and sterile environment is an essential part of providing clinical excellence for our patients (another of our values ๐Ÿ˜) and we could not do what we do, without your support. Thank you for the hard mahi you put in each and every day!

It was great to have Marianne Pike, a Family Violence Intervention Coordinator from Health NZ - Taranaki speak to our team last week.

Health professionals play a crucial role in identifying victims of family violence (sometimes known as domestic violence), so it was extremely valuable for our clinicians to build on their knowledge of how best to support our patients. Thank you Marianne! ๐Ÿ‘

Ensuring our patients receive high quality, equitable care is a priority at Carefirst, and one way that we do that is through three-yearly Foundation Standards audits by The Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners (RNZCGP).

Accreditation against these standards is our commitment to improving equitable health outcomes for patients, whฤnau/family, including Mฤori as tangata whenua. It also gives us a nationally consistent benchmark that we can measure our ourselves against.

We'd like to say a big shout out to our Merrilands, Westown and Moturoa clinics' teams who have recently completed their latest audit. A lot of time and effort goes into preparing for the audits and we appreciate the opportunity to demonstrate the hard mahi (work) our teams put in every day to ensure equitable health outcomes for our patients.
