Through challenges to change, I inspire people to reignite their fire, regain their spirit, empowering them to become the person they admire.

The deep pain of realising that you cannot relax without it. The distress that socialising “dry” is panic attack territory. The confrontation of your compulsion. There are a lot of reasons not to get sober. Just stopping drinking is the “easy” part.

Working through all your internal dysfunction is nearly not worth it.

Nearly!

But it’s better than continuing to wake up and lie to yourself.

Sobriety is the foundation to internal awareness. A human brain struggles to become conscious with neurotoxin running through it.

Research shows that 1 drink per week is the upper limit!

If you’re sober what has been the most challenging part for you? If you’re still drinking what do you think you’re holding on to?

I give big thanks to this place for holding me through this sober journey. I can show up here distressed, depressed, conflicted and confused and every single time I leave feeling calmer, clearer and confident. This age of technology, substance and speed is taking its toll on humanity. This is your reminder to get to nature, daily. Remember who you are. Experience yourself as you are without judgement.

Men - next opportunity to charge your batteries with a group of like minded men - passionate about growth, reflection and connection

Another brother holding space with us at the Aoteraroa Men's Wellbeing Summit 14-16 May, 2026 in Opoutere is Stone James.

In search of a pathway away from alcohol and drugs Stone spent four winters on the Taranaki coastline surfing in just board shorts.

The answers were not found in the exhilaration of riding powerful waves, nor in the biting chill of howling southerly winds. But within the slow, silent gaps between waves, Stone built a deep relationship with the cold water.

With this knowledge and experience Stone has been holding space for men (and women) since 2022 in sacred circles and outdoor adventures. After overcoming 20 years of addiction to alcohol, substances and other vices, Stone passionately holds the line of radical self accountability to inspire and guide others to do the same.

Let's face it - this conversation speaks to the heart of the core issues in Men's Health in New Zealand - alcohol, gambling, va**ng and other addictions. It is time for this conversation to come into the open. Let's go...

Expectations can vary greatly from reality. The path of meditation is filled with many thoughts, distractions and contradictions. Can you let go?

Men,

If you employ, lead, father, coach, mentor or support Men - Tāne - this is for you.

Men - Tāne are at the wrong end of many health statistics - heart disease, mental health, su***de, cancer, diabetes, the list goes on.

Many of us are doing mahi at the ground level, creating change in our communities to turn this tide around. Others are at the frontline, and seeing the real issues out there.

Personally, I stepped in to the arena in 2019 sharing from my own lived experience, and a result of losing too many men I loved, too early. I offer a Men's Wellbeing space, grounded in Te Taiao - reaching men where they are at with metabolic, mental, emotional and spiritual health.

I've learnt that to be the best I can be for the Men - Tāne I look after in my mahi, it’s essential for me to keep learning, rubbing shoulders with others doing the work, and keep recalibrating, myself, out in nature. Getting away regularly into new environments and expanding and aligning the mind, body and spirit on new wananga.

What are you and your team doing to keep the mauri and wairua flowing?

Last year I put the call out to others in this line of work - Men's Health - Tāne hauora - Men's Work - and just leaders of men in general - to gather, swap notes, elevate and recalibrate. The first Aotearoa Men's Wellbeing Retreat was uplifting, and we've seen positive ripples, transformations and collaborations flowing on from the first event.

We'd like to invite you, and others in your team, to the 2nd annual gathering. The 2026 Aotearoa Men's Wellbeing Summit will take place next month - from 14 to 16 May.

We'll gather in circle and share as a group. This year's themes are:
-Potential: What are we capable of men, what is our highest timeline, and what is holding us back?
-Stewardship: What are we doing to steward our own mind, body and spirit, and create a better earth for our descendants?

We've called on some men at the forefront of embodying these themes to share inspiring talks and workshops at this event:
-Jono Ridler - just days away from completing an epic swim the length of the North Island, to campaign for better ocean stewardship
-Jemarl Paerata - ex firefighter, who has transformed his life into helping Rangatahi on his kaupapa Te Kaiārahi and is part of the team at Integrated Training / Calm Under Pressure
-Rob Mokaraka - who breathes love, energy and light into the conversation around su***de and depression, tirelessly touring his kaupapa around Aotearoa
-Prof Grant Schofield - at the forefront of creating positive lifestyle medicine change in Aotearoa with PreKure
-Carl Muir (myself) - I'll be steering the waka along, after hearing the call to bring the fires together and illuminate all the awesome mahi happening around the motu
and I'll have more inspiring Tāne to share with you soon

We're holding this hui out in Te Taiao (nature - the environment) so we can kick the shoes off, and do the work we're talking about. We'll be getting in the moana for a pure, we'll be doing the breathwork and meditation, we'll be be talking from the heart and sharing around the fire - it doesn't get much better than Opoutere on the Coromandel, a beautiful golden beach, with pristine ngahere and maunga nearby which we'll walk up on the last day to vision up a better future for Aotearoa as the sun comes over the horizon.

I hope you, and/or some of your team can make the journey to Opoutere in May to join us

Stay safe in this crazy world right now.
Stay sober, stay clean. Meditate everyday. Resist the temptation to use ai for everything. Build a foundation of internal clarity.
