🏃‍♀️ Relay For Life, Taranaki is just around the corner (28 March!) and we’re excited to be lacing up for this awesome cause! It’s one of those events that brings Taranaki together in such a meaningful way; honouring loved ones, celebrating survivors, and supporting the incredible work of the Cancer Society New Zealand

At Carefirst, we see every day how much early support, prevention, and community connection matter for people’s wellbeing. That’s why Relay for Life resonates so strongly with us. Our team will be out on the track for the event, joining so many others who share the same commitment to a healthier, more supported region.

🏃‍♀️ If you’re able, we’d love you to get behind Relay for Life too, whether that’s donating, cheering everyone on, putting in a team, or even entering as an individual if you don’t have a team to join. Every bit of support helps keep this amazing community event thriving!

👏We’re celebrating two big achievements in the Carefirst whānau! Huge congratulations to Dr Helene Jorda‑Doyle (Bell Block) and Dr Jamie Crawford (Moturoa) for passing their GPEP Year 1 exams, a major milestone on the path to becoming specialist GPs.

👉GPEP Year 1 is a demanding year of exams, clinical assessments, Hauora Māori learning, patient and staff feedback, and weekly teaching. Both GPs have taken it in their stride with dedication and heart.

👉Helene and Jamie each bring rich experience to their roles and share a common passion for community‑based care and building meaningful, ongoing relationships with their patients. We’re incredibly proud of both doctors and the commitment they bring to their patients and communities.

Join us in congratulating Helene and Jamie below, and read the full story on our Community News page 👉 www.carefirst.co.nz/community-news/

Did you know the common virus HPV is one of the causes of head and neck cancers? Around 500 people in New Zealand are diagnosed with these cancers each year.

The best way to protect your children from HPV later in life is to get them immunised. The HPV vaccine is free for people aged 9 to 26 and is often offered to young people at school in Year 7 or 8. This is the best time for immunisation, as a pre-teen’s immune system is effective at making antibodies in response to the vaccine, meaning protection is long-lasting. It’s also an ideal time because most young people have not yet been exposed to HPV at this age.

It’s not too late to catch up. If your children did not receive their HPV vaccines in school, or you want to be with them for the appointment, talk to your doctor, nurse or pharmacist.

The HPV vaccine is available if you're aged 27 to 45, but there will be a charge for these. To book a vaccination or discuss options with your our nursing team, contact your enrolled Carefirst clinic.

🇹🇭 👋 From Thailand to Taranaki - meet Dr Punn Roongnirandon, our newest GP at Carefirst Westown Medical Centre.

A school trip sparked a love for New Zealand that never really left him, and that spark eventually brought Punn back for good. After five years working in our community, he and his partner Maggie are proud to call New Plymouth home, and we’re so thrilled to welcome him to the Carefirst team.

Feel free to leave your welcome for Punn in the comments and read more about his journey from a childhood in Bangkok to caring for the Taranaki community, on our Community News page: www.carefirst.co.nz/community-news/

Happy Waitangi Day! We’re closed today to mark this significant day for our nation. As we reflect, we acknowledge the importance of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and how it shapes our mahi/work. For Carefirst this means prioritising people, relationships, and being responsive to our patients’ varying needs in order to provide equitable health outcomes.

While we rest and reflect today, as we move forward throughout the year we’ll continue to challenge ourselves with how we honour Te Tiriti, incorporating it into all aspects of our health services.

👋Have a great Waitangi Day holiday, stay safe, and we’ll be open again from 8:30am on Monday.

💊From February 2026, some patients may be eligible for longer prescriptions (up to 12 months). If you’d like to talk about whether this could be right for you, book an appointment with your GP or nurse practitioner. We’re here to help.
