GLP-1 Medications and Pregnancy: What You Should Know

Ive been working with a lot of non-pregnant women on the weight loss injections (GLP-1 agonists like Wegovy) lately and thought it pertinent to address the use in pregnancy. Are they safe to take in pregnancy? The short answer is NO THEY ARE NOT SAFE.

GLP-1 medications (such as semaglutide, liraglutide, dulaglutide) are powerful tools for weight loss and metabolic health — but they’re not currently considered safe in pregnancy or breastfeeding.
Here’s what the research tells us:
🔹 New human studies are reassuring — early pregnancy exposure does not appear to increase the risk of major birth defects.
🔹 But… we still lack data on miscarriage risk, fetal growth, long-term development, and safety during breastfeeding.
🔹 Animal studies show possible effects on fetal growth and bone development.
🔹 Because of this, organisations recommend stopping GLP-1 medications before trying to conceive and avoiding them during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
If you become pregnant while taking a GLP-1:
➡️ Stop the medication
➡️ Contact your GP, midwife, or obstetrician
➡️ You may be offered additional monitoring
