Checking in with some of the incredible families 🌿✨ From backyard and beach playdate hangs to, fish & chips outdoor adventures, bonfires on the beach ~everyday moments of connection, our community are all about exploring, connecting beyond the classroom.
It’s been beautiful watching these friendships and experiences grow naturally through shared learning and living. 💚
We also have to take a moment to celebrate some of our amazing Green School learners and the inspiring journeys they’re on:
🧗 Finn is gearing up for an exciting year of climbing competitions, with a strong focus on the National Indoor Bouldering Series (NIBS) across New Zealand’s main centres. Despite recently badly lacerating his elbow and needing time to rest and recover, he’s already preparing for Bouldering Nationals, the Secondary Schools competition, and the Central North Island events. What resilience!
💃 Meanwhile, our very own “Guardian of the Earth” Pearl is dancing her heart out around the world! Having just returned from Scotland (via Egypt 📸) Pearl proudly performed at the 2025 Tomintoul Highland Games, representing New Zealand in her black & white colours ~ incredible dedication!
🎶 Coco & Nate’s musical talents are also taking them places ~ and it’s easy to see why.
Coco was recently nominated to attend Nationals in October for ballet after previously being nominated for contemporary & jazz, proudly representing her studio .dance .
🎹 Nate, already playing piano at a virtuoso level, is preparing for the biggest competition of his life this December ‘The NZ National Concerto’ in Christchurch, where he’ll perform accompanied by an orchestra.
We are endlessly proud of the passion, perseverance, creativity & courage our learners continue to show, both inside and beyond the classroom. 🌱

‘Māwhero Pink Shirt Day’, coming together to stop bullying, celebrate diversity, and encourage kindness and inclusivity!
Our learners curated and edited a video for assembly, and we had a very special Taonga (treasure) visitor… a real-life ‘kiwi in the Kina’ on campus! More 📸 to come…
Together, we strengthened our understanding of how to recognise, prevent, and stand up against verbal, social, and cyberbullying.
This year’s message reminded us that we all have the power to Speak Up, Stand Together, Stop Bullying ~ using our voices to promote inclusion, kindness, and respect. 💖

What a fantastic dress up Cross Country!🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️

Our students showed incredible determination, resilience, and school spirit as they tackled the course (yes… that hill!) and cheered one another on every step of the way. It was wonderful to see everyone embracing their taha tinana (physical wellbeing) and giving it their all.

Congratulations to all participants, we are so proud of your effort and perseverance!

A big thank you to our amazing kaiako (teachers) and learner helpers who ran the course twice~ made the day such a success.

This year has hit the ground running ~ 27 new families joined us, and 8 more this term. To welcome them, our community gathered for one of Green School NZ’s most treasured ceremonies.
Shown here is the part where the ‘new families’ & learners physically cross over to meet our established families ~ a real, heartfelt welcome into community.
Stories are shared. Connections are made. And then, together, each new family plants a tree on campus. 🌱
A special welcome to our families joining from North America, Hawaii, Mexico, and beyond~ we’re so glad you’re here.🌿

You don’t just join a school ~ you plant a legacy. 🌱

We warmly welcome our new families to the soil of Taranaki and into a cherished Green School tradition: our tree‑planting ceremony.
This ritual is about putting down roots and becoming kaitiaki ~ guardians of the land. Over the years, many learners and families return to visit the trees they planted, clearing grass or giving them water during term time.
It’s a living symbol of growth, connection, and stewardship that continues long after the first day of school. 🌿

The Green School New Zealand Art Department 🎨 has been diving into the world of contemporary art, inspired by Hello NP Taranaki’s very own ‘GET UP’ Graffiti Festival.

Over the week-long festival, our learners (and Green School whānau) stepped behind the spray can, exploring street art with a field Auahatia field trip into town which sparked curiosity through a Think / See / Wonder lens - observing, sketching, and asking big questions, before bringing those ideas back into Whare Sarah’s art classroom.
Influenced by artists like Banksy and the idea of ‘messages with meaning’, learners explored how art can provoke thought and create impact. Minds were blown watching the moment Banksy’s artwork famously shredded itself at a LIVE auction, what a powerful example of Art with impact!

From there, creativity flowed. Learners experimented with installations and immersive art experiences, discovering how art can be something you step into, not just look at.

Across the school, creativity has been everywhere - Year 5/6 learners carefully sketching flower cuttings from Troppo House, exploring the sensory beauty of dahlias, while our junior primary learners journeyed to Antarctica through their art, creating papier-mâché penguins during Monday afternoon Auahutia. 🐧🌸

At our full school assemblies, we celebrate our Mana Awards, a special moment where we acknowledge learners who show manakitanga: care, respect, and kindness for their peers and the wider campus community. 💚

As we begin a new Term, Whaea Kelly reminded us that there are always plenty of problems in the world to solve. This group of Mana Award recipients showed a powerful theme, learners being recognised for their inclusive language, empathy, and the way they care for their community. We are so proud of these young people who lead with kindness and remind us what true mana looks like.

Moving to a ‘Lifestyle block, (not ‘Life-sentence block’ as some call it around here) has been a wonderful experience for Gemma, one of our teachers.

Originally from suburban Wellington, Teacher Gemma and her whānau made the leap to rural Taranaki in search of a slower, more connected way of living- and they’re loving every moment. Now settled on a small lifestyle block in Ōakura , their days include caring for calves, chickens, and their much-loved dogs Penny and Morocco.
Gemma and her partner (a helicoper pilot 🚁) and three children are all thriving in their new rhythm of life.
With 20 years of teaching experience across roles and countries, especially in special education and supporting neurodiverse learners, Gemma brings creativity, warmth, and a deep passion for helping each child shine. She loves weaving creative experiences into the school day and getting to know our beautiful learners and their families. We’re so lucky to have her as part of our Green School community. 💚🌱

From mountain summits to coastal surf camps, our learners have been out exploring, connecting, and growing through real-world experiences.
Each year, our Year 12–13 learners take on a special coming-of-age challenge: summiting Mount Taranaki. In true adventurous spirit, this year’s group set off in challenging conditions, arriving at the hut soaked but smiling, navigating by headlamp into the night, and sharing a well-earned meal (complete with chocolate brownie and ice-cream 🍫).
With an early start the next morning, they climbed alongside an experienced alpinist making their way along Humphries Ridge and up the technical ‘Lizard’ route. At 10:30am, they reached the summit, rewarded with incredible views and a powerful moment to pause, reflect, and take it all in. An epic journey of resilience, teamwork, and achievement. Ka rawe!
Closer to home, our senior learners embraced the magic of simple overnight camping, unplugging, gathering by the fire, and slowing down together at Green Camp near Fern Whare beside the awa (river).
Meanwhile, our Warriors of the Earth (Year 5/6) headed to the coast at Ōpunake, diving into surf lessons, coastal walks, and seaside adventures. Even with fire restrictions, creativity shone through with a special Glow Fire Camp ✨
These are the moments that matter, learning through experience, building connection, and deepening relationships with each other and the natural world.
Learn, connect, protect. 🌏
