The emptiness that arrives when a child leaves home
This post has been patiently sitting in my journal since my last child left home last August.
I funnily felt ready to post it today.
There is a weird emptiness that settles in when a child leaves home.
Having four children gave me a false sense of security. I thought I had years before the house went quiet. But the last child leaving snuck up ridiculously fast and hit a nerve I wasn’t expecting.
It is not heavy.
It is not dramatic.
It's a quiet emptiness that moves through the house and through the body.
The rhythm of life changes, familiar sounds fade, the daily excuse 'it's for the kids' is no longer.
The heart feels the space before the mind understands it.
This emptiness is a sign of new beginnings, the beginning of a new relationship with you!
Room for reflection and room for the parts of you that waited patiently while you lovingly raised your children.
The comfort zone of motherhood shifts, the identity softens, the soul steps forward.
Whatever stage you are in on the motherhood journey, take a deep breath and give yourself permission to be happy.
Celebrate your children.
Embrace everything that comes your way.
