Tiny habits to gift yourself this May
Lately I've been thinking a lot about the seasons and how the calendar months sit within them, each one carrying its own particular light and energy.
Today, as I look out the window, I see stillness, calm, and sunshine. May is a beautiful month, and today she is shining in all her glory.
Here in New Zealand, May sits at the forefront of winter, holding guard, preparing us gently for the cold ahead. There's something quietly sacred about that role. Its winter, but not yet the deep of winter. A month of transition.
And transition, I've learned, is one of the best times to gift yourself something small and intentional.
Inviting new habits into our lives doesn't have to mean overhauling everything. It just means softening into what nourishes you, especially when the days grow shorter and the pull toward the couch gets stronger. Little anchors of joy. Tiny acts of self-kindness.
Here are a few I've been sitting with lately, and ones I'd gently offer to you:
Step outside in the morning light, even for five minutes. Winter sun is still sun. Let it land on your face and body.
Make something warm and slow. A pot of soup. A cup of tea you actually sit down with. May invites us to slow our pace, let the kitchen become a small ritual of care.
Put your hands on your heart before you get out of bed. Just for a breath or two. Notice what's there. You don't have to fix what thoughts or feelings are going on as you wake, just acknowledge it. This is the foundation of every energy practice I know.
Light a candle at the end of the day. Signal to your body that the doing is done and rest can begin. Something about candles in the evening is genuinely healing.
Rest without guilt. This one's for my fellow over-givers. May is literally asking us to slow down, the trees are doing it, wildlife is doing it. You're allowed to do it too.
Winter doesn't have to be something we brace against. With the right tiny rituals, it can become a season we actually sink into, warm, nourished, and held.

A winter self-care ritual worth trying this weekend.
When the temperature drops and the days shorten, our bodies naturally crave warmth, stillness and nourishment.
Here's a simple ritual I love this time of year:
🛀A warm bath or shower | consciously releasing the week from your body
🕯️Lighting a candle | signal to your nervous system that it's safe to slow down
☕ Something warm to drink | held in both hands, no scrolling
🌿 5 minutes of stillness | just breathing, just being
No agenda, no productivity, just you, tending to yourself.
This is the energy that Reiki amplifies, that deep permission to rest.

There's something my pets do; they love without an agenda. They see me without the mask. They sit with me in the dark and don't ask me to explain myself.
They love me on my worst days. The ugly-cry days. The days I don't have anything to give. The days I forget to love myself.

No judgment. No conditions. Just presence.

Anyone who's ever been greeted at the door like they hung the moon knows what it really is.

It's Love. Pure. Uncomplicated. The kind of love we're all trying to find and some of us are lucky enough to come home to everyday.

Our animals teach us something quietly profound: that love doesn't have to be earned. It can just be given.

Maybe we could all take a lesson from them. 🐾

To check in.
To ask, "what do I want to call in"? and "what do I want to let go of"?
This month I'm calling in more ease. More clients who are ready to feel better. More mornings by the fire with a hot coffee.

Grief lives in the body. Here's what that actually means.
We tend to think of grief as an emotion, something we feel, process, eventually move through.
But after 33 years in nursing and years of energy healing practice, I've come to understand something different.
Grief doesn't just live in the mind; it also lives in the body.
In the chest, the throat, the shoulders.
The exhaustion that 10 hours of sleep doesn't touch.
When we lose someone or something-a relationship, a version of ourselves, a life we thought we'd have, that loss leaves an energetic imprint.
And if it doesn't move, it stays, sometimes for years.
Reiki works gently with that imprint, by creating space for something new to begin.
You don't have to be ready. You just have to be willing. 🌿

To every mum who gives everything and keeps nothing for herself, this one's for you. 💛
To the mum who is always the strong one. Who holds everyone together. Who can't remember the last time someone asked how she was doing.
You deserve to be held too.
We've been conditioned to believe that doing life, all the time, is just part of the role. And while mums are remarkable in their capacity, that constant state of giving, managing, and holding isn't sustainable. It takes a quiet toll on your nervous system, your body, your soul.
Letting go of the need to control everything, to be everything, to perfect everything That's liberation.
A Reiki or Access Bars session is one of the most loving things you can do for yourself or gift to someone you love. It goes deeper than flowers. Deeper than brunch. It says I see you.
Whether it's for you, your mum, or the woman in your life who never stops giving she deserves this.
Happy Mother's Day to all the beautiful Mummas in my life and in this amazing space.
And to my own Mum, who resides in the ether now, I love you and I miss you, but I know you're here. ❤️

Another question I get asked a lot "will this actually work for me?"
And my honest answer is always the same.
I don't know. And nobody can promise you that.
What I CAN tell you is this every single person who has lain on my table came in carrying something. And every single one of them left a little lighter.
Whatever it is, something shifts. Every time.
You won't know until you try. And the trying is an act of love towards yourself.

Hot take: trying to appeal to everyone is the fastest way to connect with no one.
Spotify can be for everyone. Your wellness practice probably shouldn’t be.
The most powerful thing I’ve done for Breathe Reiki Room is stop trying to make it feel generic and start trusting that the right people will feel it.
Not everyone. The right ones.
The ones who already sense something’s calling them. Who are ready to slow down, go inward, and do something that actually moves the needle on how they feel.

“Why you can’t stay consistent (it’s not what you think)”

"Why is it so easy to start… and so hard to stay consistent?
It’s not because you’re lazy.
It’s because you’ve been relying on motivation…"
You wait to feel like it. You wait for the “right time”. You wait until you’re in the mood.
And when that disappears (because it always does) … so do your habits.
So, you start again. And again. And again.
And it’s exhausting.
What actually changed things for me?
I stopped asking: “Do I feel like it today?”
And started deciding: “This is just what I do now.”
Not perfectly. Not every single day.
But consistently enough that I stopped going back to zero.
That’s the difference.
Be honest, are you relying on motivation right now?

Gratitude for our Bodies
I used to spend so much time picking my body apart.
Too this. Not enough that. Waiting for the “one day” where I’d finally feel confident in it.
And honestly? That day never came until I changed how I looked at things.
Because this body, it’s carried me through some really hard seasons. It’s kept going when I was exhausted. It’s adapted, healed, grown, stretched (in more ways than one 😅).
And I realised, I don’t need to love every single part of it to be grateful for it.
Gratitude isn’t about pretending everything’s perfect. It’s about recognising what your body does for you daily that you probably overlook.
Walking. Breathing. Showing up… even when everything’s hitting the fan.
So lately, I’ve been shifting from “How do I fix this?” to “Thank you for holding me through this.”
And that’s changed everything.
Don’t get me wrong, I still have days where I’m like really? this again? 😂
But I come back to gratitude quicker now.
And that feels like freedom.

Something I don't talk about enough is my own healing journey.
I have spent 33 years caring for other people as a nurse and 30 years as a mother.
And like most nurses and women for that fact, I was very good at putting myself last.
The irony of being a healer who needed healing wasn't lost on me.
Reiki found me at a point in my life when I needed something I couldn't name. I needed to come home to myself.
And it changed everything.
Not overnight, but layer by layer, session by session things I'd been carrying for years began to soften and release.
Now I get to offer that same experience to other women.
If you've spent years caring for everyone else this is your reminder that you are allowed to be cared for too.
