Following the devastating deaths of a number of babies in Aotearoa from pertussis (whooping cough), Te Whatu Ora is urging all tamariki and pregnant women to ensure they are immunised against this highly infectious disease. Immunisations are free in NZ for children and pregnant women. Immunisation during pregnancy helps protect babies until they are old enough to be vaccinated themselves.

Don't be afraid to put boundaries in place for visitors. Also remember that no oexpects you to have a show home in the days after your birth so be kind to yourself.

"“Can I come to see your baby?”
Words that caused my heart to sink
For, of course I want to see you,
But I’m weary and I stink.

It’s been days since I got dressed
and there’s chaos everywhere.
Dirty dishes overflowing,
and there’s breast milk in my hair.

I’m really in survival mode.
I can’t tell the nights from days.
My life has been uprooted
in oh so many ways.

My head feels like exploding
and I’m trying to just BE.
Yes, I’ve gained this new addition,
but I’ve lost a piece of ME.

A new love has engulfed me
and transformed my every being:
A love that, all at once,
is so constricting, and so freeing.

So, please, dear ones, I ask of you
to just give me some time
to navigate this new terrain
that’s really so sublime.

And, soon, I’ll have you visit:
I can’t wait for you to meet.
But, right now all I can manage
is to feed, sleep, and repeat."

Is it safe to fly when pregnant?

We often get asked this question and now that our borders have re-opened we understand many of you are keen to travel.

Air travel is safe for mum and baby but many airlines have a restriction on when they will accept you on to their flights. Usually this is about 36 weeks although for domestic flights and flights up to 4 hours, it may be later.

You'll probably need a letter confirming your pregnancy details that you can get from us. However, always check with your individual airline what their policy is, before you book.
