It started as a tiny red scratch that wouldn’t heal. 😟☀️

For Leah, a lifelong ocean lover, that small spot on her forehead turned out to be basal cell carcinoma, a type of skin cancer that needed urgent treatment.

She never thought it would happen to her. But when she returned for a follow-up, the spot had changed, and a biopsy confirmed it was more serious than it looked. Surgery followed, and thankfully, Leah is now recovering.

Remember to always wear sunscreen, check your skin, and get your skin checked regularly because skin cancer doesn’t always look scary. Sometimes it’s subtle, until it isn’t.

Why are so many young people still risking their health for a tan? ☀️📲

More than 1 in 4 Aussies aged 18 to 24 are getting sunburnt every month, with many influenced by social media trends that glorify tanning and downplay the risks of UV exposure.

Melanoma survivor Grace Passfield knows the consequences all too well. Diagnosed with stage 4 melanoma at just 33, she says early sun exposure likely played a part.

Sunburn now can mean skin cancer later, and it’s not worth it!

Always wear SPF 50+, cover up, reapply sunscreen, and get your skin checked.

No symptoms. No warning signs. Just a routine check that saved a life. 👁️

Carolyn Alkemade, a nurse and long-time MoleMap patient, was diagnosed with ocular melanoma, a rare form of melanoma that affects the eye, during a standard eye test. She had no pain, no vision issues, and no visible signs.

It was only thanks to a dilated eye exam that the tumour was detected. From there, Carolyn began treatment and started sharing her story to raise awareness of this lesser-known melanoma.

Her advice? Keep on top of your regular health checks and don’t dismiss something just because it feels small or invisible.

Early detection works, even when nothing feels wrong.

UVA vs UVB: What’s the difference? ☀️🧴

UVA rays are responsible for ageing and long-term skin damage. They pe*****te deeper into the skin, pass through clouds and glass, and are present all year round.

On the other hand, UVB rays are the ones that burn the skin. They affect the outer layer, are stronger in summer, and are the main cause of sunburn and skin redness.

☀️ Both can lead to skin cancer over time.
🧴 That’s why SPF 30 or above, broad spectrum sunscreen is a must.
🧢 Wear protective clothing, seek shade, and don’t forget your sunglasses.
📆 Check your skin regularly and make skin checks part of your routine.

Protect your skin today, your future self will thank you!

“No one knows your body better than you.” 💬☀️

During her second pregnancy, Cecilia noticed a dark, itchy mole that didn’t look or feel right. She was dismissed by two doctors but trusted her instincts and pushed for a referral.

It turned out to be melanoma in-situ, caught just before it could spread. After successful MOHS surgery, she now has regular check-ups every three months.

Let this be a reminder: trust your gut, speak up, and protect your skin. Early detection can save your life.

The health check you shouldn’t overlook this winter ❄️

Our Chief Medical Officer, Dr Lorna Claydon, was recently featured in sharing why winter is an ideal time for a skin check.

As Dr Lorna explains, “Although we don’t go brown in winter, we’re still accumulating sun damage.” UVA rays are present year-round and can contribute to long-term skin damage even through glass.

With skin covered by layers during colder months, subtle changes can easily go unnoticed. That’s why a Full Body MoleMap is so valuable. Establishing a clear baseline now can support earlier diagnosis and greater peace of mind.

Three winter skincare steps you might be missing ❄️

Dermal therapist and seasoned MoleMapper is a firm believer in giving your skin extra support during the colder months, and that includes annual skin checks.

Here are the three winter skincare steps you might be missing:
1️⃣ Barrier repair – Support your skin with ingredients like ceramides or squalane
2️⃣ Gentle exfoliation – Helps hydrating products absorb more effectively
3️⃣ Skin checks – Winter is the perfect time to check in and create a clear baseline

And don’t skip daily SPF, even when it’s cloudy!

With more layers and less skin visibility, winter is the ideal time to book your Full Body MoleMap and stay ahead of any changes.

“I ignored the signs of skin cancer for years – please don’t make my mistake.” ☀️⚠️

Jessica Barrett noticed a small, pearly bump on her cheek. It wasn’t dark or painful, so she didn’t worry. For years, she covered it with make-up and carried on, until it became more visible and harder to ignore.

Eventually, she was diagnosed with basal cell carcinoma, the most common form of skin cancer. What could have been a minor procedure turned into invasive surgery, leaving a long scar and months of recovery.

“If I’d had this checked sooner, it would have been simple,” she says. “Now I wear [sunscreen] every day and live with the impact of waiting too long.”

This shows that even small, pale spots can be serious. Don’t wait. Check your skin and get checked if something feels off.

“I don’t even take my shirt off really…”

But Mitchell Barwell still needed urgent surgery after a routine skin check revealed a suspicious mole on his back.

At 27, Mitchell had no idea he was at risk. He rarely spent time in the sun and used sunscreen when he did. Yet a quiet moment at a BBC Sun Safe event led to a discovery that may have saved his life.

Skin cancer can develop even when you least expect it. It does not matter how old you are or how much sun you think you have had.

A skin check could make all the difference. Read more about Mitchell’s story via BBC News:

Mitchell Barwell said he never takes his shirt off in the sun, so did not think he could be at risk.
