Sensory processing
Bodies ability to process the senses that you receive from day to day.

What are our senses?
There’s the classic one such as: touch, taste, smell, hearing and vision.
But then there’s the movemeny based senses: proprioception + vestibular. Proprioception being the bodies ability to find it self in space and vestibular, balance.

Input from our different senses can help us to regulate our emotions. Eg. Sometimes you may just need a hug or a cup of tea or exercise may help you focus. Senses just make sense. 🤷🏽‍♀️

MORE ABOUT THE F-WORDS

The F words is based on the wider international classification of functioning and disability is a model that talks about the factors that have an impact on function.

In life we are so focused on the doing, but what impacts our doing / our function. Well our fitness levels, our support systems - whanau and friends, and of course the fun we have!

These things may seem common knowledge, but oh man are they important when working with kids 🤩

Well Occupation is anything we do to occupy our time right? 🤷🏽‍♀️
So enter Occupational Therapy.
This is where there is disruption and participating in daily occupations becomes difficult.

Disruption could be caused by injury, illness or disability.

I love to say that I ‘do life alongside people, and help them out where needed.’ 🤙

OTs target areas of productivity, leisure and self care that are important to the individual and their whānau.

Hey party people! I’m Grace. 🙋🏽‍♀️
I am a qualified paediatric OT and I have been working in the field of paeds for 5 years. I am passionate about kids getting out there and keeping up with their peers, making friends and participating in the things they want to (but also need to).
I am passionate about kids being better kids! ✨

Why kids? Because of the joy they carry! That and I am a big ol’ kid myself!

My strengths as an OT?
✨Sensory processing, both coaching teaching staff and parents, and coming up with interventions.
✨Fine motor - teaching skills and developing hand strength.
✨Life skills - teaching parents how to teach these skills.
✨Meaningful Occupation - helping kids get involved in the leisure activities they want to.

My fave things? 💁🏽‍♀️
Green, giraffes, being in the ocean, friends, sewing, music!

To define Occupational Therapy, you first have to define occupation?
‘Oh a job right?’ Nope!

Def: Anything you do to occupy your time.

Occupation can be broken into three categories: productivity, self care and leisure. 👩🏽‍💻💆🏽‍♀️💁🏽‍♀️

So ‘work hard, play hard’, is indeed a thing! Balance is good, it doesn’t have to be perfectly balanced, just not overloaded in one area!
