Our community lost an amazing hard working, super caring woman this week. A lady well known around Palmerston North, working in many of Vautiers pharmacies around town. Her smile, her hair, her heart, and her aura, just beautiful. We lost a good one. I have never met anyone like her and will miss her very much and so will the Team at West End. RIP Karlyn. (Jane)

Infectious Syphilis notified in the MidCentral.

There were six cases of infectious syphilis notified in the MidCentral area between October and December 2025. Of particular concern, three of these were detected in pregnancy.

Syphilis is an infection transmitted through intimate contact with mucocutaneous skin, including vaginal, pe**le, a**l and oral s*x. Condoms are not fully protective. Transmission in pregnancy (mainly transplacental) can also occur.

Common signs of early syphilis include an ulcer (chancre) in the mouth or ge***al area, or a maculopapular rash on the trunk, sometimes involving the palms of the hands or soles of the feet. Around 50% of people with early syphilis are asymptomatic. Syphilis can lead to serious long term health consequences if untreated.

Syphilis in pregnancy can lead to miscarriage, stillbirth, premature birth, neonatal death, low birth weight, or significant health consequences in a live-born infant.

Syphilis is usually easily curable with antibiotics. Early diagnosis and treatment in pregnancy significantly reduces the risk of conge***al syphilis. There is no risk of conge***al syphilis if syphilis is diagnosed and treated before a pregnancy occurs.
