Progress on our new premises is going well, and with this move, we’re excited to share our practice will have a new name: Te Hā Health Care.

Te Hā Health Care draws on the phrase ‘Te hā o te ora’ – the breath of life and wellbeing. It reflects a holistic view of health and connects to the story of Hine Ahuone, the first woman who was given the breath of life by Tāne, the Māori ātua and guardian of mankind.

All our currently enrolled Group Medical patients will become Te Hā Health Care patients - there won’t be any disruptions to your care. Our full Group Medical team will be moving with us, and we’re also in the process of hiring more talented staff to join our team.

We’re on track to open this new centre mid May. You can see more about this in the latest issue of Focus on Manawatū - https://issuu.com/apn_mediaservices/docs/focus_on_manawatu_-_march_2026 - and we’ll keep you updated as we get closer. This expansion also means we can enrol new patients - if you have friends or whānau who are looking for a GP, they can enrol at www.groupmedical.nz.

March can be a good time to check in on your overall immunisation status, especially before the school holidays sneak up on us! Making sure MMR, whooping cough, and other routine vaccines are up to date helps protect you, your whānau, and the wider community ❤️. Flu vaccinations will also be available from the 1st April.

Not every health concern needs a GP appointment. 💊🏥

Your local pharmacy can help with many common issues like minor skin infections, eye irritation, eczema, fevers and some urinary infections, all without a prescription. Pharmacists are trained health professionals and can tell you when it’s safe to treat at home and when it’s best to see a doctor or nurse. If you’re not sure where to start, chat with your pharmacy can point you in the right direction.

That might mean booking in for an overdue screening test, checking in on long-term conditions like diabetes or blood pressure, or talking about your sleep or mood if things haven’t felt right.

Even short rides - to the shops, kura, or around the block - can boost mood, support heart health, and reduce stress. If biking isn’t your thing, any regular movement still helps, like walking, swimming, or even dancing in the lounge 🕺

Still finding your sleep a bit all over the place after the holidays? 😴 Improving your ‘sleep hygiene’ (we know, it sounds odd!) can really help. Here are some tips:
💤Going to bed and getting up around the same time each day
💤 Getting some morning light
💤 Avoiding long naps
💤 Trying a bit of wind-down time before bed, like reading, a warm shower, or quiet music
💤 Keeping phones and screens out of the bedroom where you can.

Extended prescriptions aren’t automatic and they’re not right for everyone. Your GP or Nurse Practitioner will decide what’s safe and appropriate - you can talk with us about whether this might work for you at your next routine in‑person appointment.

Sunburn isn’t the only summer skin issue. 🦟Insect bites, rashes and more scrapes and scratches can all flare up in hot weather.

The basics still work best: gentle daily washing 🚿, keeping nails short and clean ✋, and covering any sores with a clean plaster. If sores are not improving, look red, feel hot, or your child seems unwell, get in touch with our team - treating skin problems early can stop them getting serious 📞💕

River and beach trips are a big part of summer, and a little planning keeps them safe and fun.

🌊 Always keep tamariki within arm’s reach near water
🌊Swim where there are others around
🌊 Make sure lifejackets fit properly when you’re on boats or kayaks.

If you or your child are not strong swimmers, consider lessons or stick to shallow, calm areas. A quick chat as a whānau about “who’s watching the kids” can make all the difference.
