Te Hā Health Care is getting ready to welcome you, our Group Medical whānau.

We’re down to the final touches inside the new building at 60 Victoria Ave, as we prepare for Group Medical patients and staff to make Te Hā Health Care their new health and wellbeing home from Friday 8 May. The team is working hard to avoid any disruptions to care as we make the move.

We’ll also soon be introducing the Local Health App - our safe, secure online patient portal that allows you to manage healthcare for yourself or on behalf of your whānau. We’ll share more on
this (and our new website!) very soon.

A reminder that we’re also accepting new patients - if you have friends or whānau who are looking for a GP, they can enrol with Te Hā Health Care at www.groupmedical.nz

Our Local Health whānau is in the spotlight in the latest issues of The Post and Focus on Manawatū! Our colleagues at Feilding Health Care, Dr Matthew Prouse and Dr Eliza Mudgway, are sharing what it’s like to come home and work as GPs in the Manawatū. 💚

While this story is talking to FHC staff, having a teaching practice within the Local Health network benefits all our clinics. It helps attract homegrown doctors back to our region, supports their training and mentoring, and strengthens the GP workforce for all our patients.

When we invest in junior doctors and support them to build long-term careers here, we’re investing in continuity of care and in the health of the whole region.

You can read the story in Focus on Manawatū to learn more about their journey and why “coming home” matters so much. 🩺

From 1 April, New Zealand is updating how we classify prediabetes and diabetes using the HbA1c blood test, to line up with international standards.

The new thresholds are:
41 or less = normal
42–47 = prediabetes (higher risk)
48 or above = diabetes (previously this was 50 or above)

Because the diabetes threshold is moving from 50 to 48 mmol/mol, a small number of people who were previously prediabetic will now be considered to have diabetes. You can reach out to us to discuss what this means, and whether any changes to your care are needed.

If your recent blood tests put you in the prediabetes or diabetes range, lifestyle is still the cornerstone of care – things like food choices, physical activity, and weight management – with medication to support this if needed.

Your Local Health team is here to help you achieve good health and appropriately manage your diabetes risk. If you’re unsure what your HbA1c means, or have questions, book an appointment and we can talk it through.

With Easter just around the corner, our practice will be closed from Friday for the long weekend. We will open again as normal on Tuesday.

If you need urgent support between now and then, Practice Plus is available for same-day online appointments, or you can call Healthline any time on 0800 611 116 for free advice.

As we move into April, it also means that flu vaccinations are now available. These are a quick and easy way to help protect your whānau. You can book an appointment for your flu jab through Vensa Health or by phoning our practice. Have a safe and healthy Easter break! 🐰

Progress on our new premises is going well, and with this move, we’re excited to share our practice will have a new name: Te Hā Health Care.

Te Hā Health Care draws on the phrase ‘Te hā o te ora’ – the breath of life and wellbeing. It reflects a holistic view of health and connects to the story of Hine Ahuone, the first woman who was given the breath of life by Tāne, the Māori ātua and guardian of mankind.

All our currently enrolled Group Medical patients will become Te Hā Health Care patients - there won’t be any disruptions to your care. Our full Group Medical team will be moving with us, and we’re also in the process of hiring more talented staff to join our team.

We’re on track to open this new centre mid May. You can see more about this in the latest issue of Focus on Manawatū - https://issuu.com/apn_mediaservices/docs/focus_on_manawatu_-_march_2026 - and we’ll keep you updated as we get closer. This expansion also means we can enrol new patients - if you have friends or whānau who are looking for a GP, they can enrol at www.groupmedical.nz.

March can be a good time to check in on your overall immunisation status, especially before the school holidays sneak up on us! Making sure MMR, whooping cough, and other routine vaccines are up to date helps protect you, your whānau, and the wider community ❤️. Flu vaccinations will also be available from the 1st April.

If you’re unsure what you or your tamariki have had, contact us - we can look it up and chat about what’s recommended for your age and situation.

Still finding your sleep a bit all over the place after the holidays? 😴 Improving your ‘sleep hygiene’ (we know, it sounds odd!) can really help. Here are some tips:
💤Going to bed and getting up around the same time each day
💤 Getting some morning light
💤 Avoiding long naps
💤 Trying a bit of wind-down time before bed, like reading, a warm shower, or quiet music
💤 Keeping phones and screens out of the bedroom where you can.

If sleep is regularly a struggle, book in a chat so we can look at options together.
