We provide specialist palliative care to local people living with a life-limiting condition, and support for their families/whanau - all free-of-charge.
The Hospice serves a population of around 200,000 people, covering Palmerston North City, the Manawatu, Tararua, Rangitikei and Horowhenua districts, and also Otaki.
We provide a 24/7 service and have approximately 220 patients in our care at any one time. Annually, we provide care for more than 1000 patients. Around two-thirds are cared for entirely in their own home or place of residence in the community. One third had a stay in our 10-bed in-patient unit in Palmerston North, often for symptom management before returning home.
Arohanui Hospice is only partially-funded by the government via MidCentral DHB and Whanganui DHB. However, to ensure that our services remain free of charge, we need to fundraise around half of our operational funding. In the 2018/19 year that figure is $2.82 million, which works out to us needing to fundraise over $54,000 every week!
Our vision is to ensure that people with life-limiting conditions gain the most from life, live well and die well - with peace, dignity and comfort - irrespective of their condition or care setting.
