With so many options available, choosing an intraocular lens that meets your visual needs can be daunting. We are here to listen to your vision concerns, carefully examine your eyes, and help you select the most suitable lenses for your requirements. The cataract questionnaire will help us guide you towards the best choice for you.

Congratulations to our former registrar, Aqeeda Singh, on our case's poster presentation at the RANZCO NZ Branch meeting and the ANZGS (Australian and New Zealand Glaucoma Society).

The patient presented with an IOP of 68 mmHg after having a glaucoma drainage device placed elsewhere. We used an argon laser to perform iridoplasty in order to release iris tissue caught in the tip of the glaucoma drainage device. The pressure immediately reduced to 7 mmHg.
This is an effective and minimally invasive technique to address this situation.

Thank you to everyone who attended, and to the other speakers, Dr. William Shew and Dr. Robert Barrett. A special thanks to Siok Khim Taylor for organising such a lovely and insightful evening.

Are you planning to pop the Champagne this weekend? This lady in her 60s presented with this rosette-shaped cataract in her left eye, which had developed following a champagne cork injury 40 years ago. Her vision has been gradually deteriorating, and she has lost confidence in driving. Following uneventful cataract surgery, she was delighted with her vision which improved from 6/18 to 6/9 unaided the following day.
Luckily for her, this Champagne cork injury did not result in more severe ocular damage. Champagne corks can fly at 80 kph, but following three simple steps, as the American Academy of Ophthalmology suggested, can prevent severe eye injuries.

During cataract surgery, the cataract is replaced with a new intraocular lens (IOL). This will significantly improve your vision, although you may still need glasses. Modern IOL options can greatly reduce your reliance on glasses. You can find more information about lens implant choices here.

I am thrilled to announce that we can now offer corneal crosslinking to patients with keratoconus at Palmerston North Hospital.

Keratoconus is a potentially blinding eye disease that mainly affects younger patients and is more common in Māori and Pacific peoples. Corneal crosslinking is a highly effective treatment that has been proven to halt the progression of the disease in over 90% of patients. Having this treatment available here improves access to essential care, reducing the risk of disease progression and vision impairment.
