Tihei Mauriora! Ki te whaiao, ki te Ao Mārama. The breath, the energy of life! To the dawn light, to the World of light. From a healing perspective it’s about emergence from the darkness of unwellness into the world of light! Ko wai au? ...
Ko Takitimu, Ko Mataatua ngā Waka
Ko Ōrangi, Ko Tuwatawata ngā Maunga
Ko Whakakī nui-a-rua te Roto, Ko Whirinaki te Awa
Ko Ngāti Kahungunu ki Te Wairoa, Ko Ngāti Whare ngā Iwi
Ko Ngāi Te Ipu, Ko Ngāti Tuahiwi ngā Hapū
I tipu ake ahau i Mt Maunganui
Ko Megan Read tōku Ingoa
I also acknowledge my Walsh, Irish & English ancestry. In the early 60's, my parents came to Mt Maunganui to get married. I was born & raised there. As a teenager, I lived on our whenua in Whakakī (Nth of Wairoa) where I connected with my Kuia, on a spiritual level, who was the healer there. However, work life soon took over. After 21 years working on construction sites, I decided to study at Toi Ohomai in 2006 to become a Personal Trainer. I then worked there for 15 years. I bring these skills forward to assist people in gaining the best outcome. In 2017, I finally acknowledged the consistent calls from my Kuia (Spiritually) to start learning rongoā māori. Firstly, with Jolie Davis & then with Atarangi Murupaenga. Their guidance towards my growth & development within the traditional Māori healing teachings has been life changing on all levels of being. It has been fast, intense & challenging at times however, necessary. The learning is continuous & for life! Faith & trust in my pathway led to the opening of:
TE AO MĀRAMA TRADITIONAL MĀORI BODYWORK
We are the healers of ourselves! Life's challenges can cloud this realization. At times we need assistance to help facilitate this process to remember & reconnect to the true essence of who we are. Just like the butterfly, without the struggle & fight through adversity, it would not be able to build the strength needed to break out of the darkness & into the light. A transformative process to freedom of being. Tools of guidance, education, support, advice are provided to empower & uplift until people are ready to take over the reins of healing for themselves. Self-responsible, self-accountable. It all starts with a choice! Healing is not a destination; it is a way of being. We need to be shapeshifters that adapt & change with the flow of life. To regularly practice self-honouring. SERVICES.....

ROMIROMI / MIRIMIRI / WHITIWHITIKŌRERO:
Traditional Maaori bodywork can help to release stress, tension & trauma held deep within the body at a cellular level that has accumulated through life's experiences. The movement is slow to get the depth needed for release to take place. It’s not about causing pain; it’s extracting pain to awaken the body, mind & spirit. To remember who you are, as a spiritual being having a physical experience. MAHI RAAKAU - SELF HELP/HEALING
One of the traditional practices of our Traditional Māori Healing Arts. Working the body with a Raakau (stick). The use of the he Raakau will help people discover the places and parts of the body that are challenged. It will always move the user to a deeper level of awareness of self that may have been forgotten. The feet are considered the gateway to the body, so therefore must be worked on first. To open the body up, ignite the internal organs and to instantly bring people into the here & now. A sequence is used to work sections of the feet which correspond to sections of the torso. The movement is slow to get the depth needed to release stored tension, stress & trauma. The work can trigger memories, injuries, past life patterns. It’s not about causing pain; it’s about awakening the body, mind & spirit. Once the feet have been opened, a larger Rākau is used to work the torso in sections. Wānanga are held bi-monthly at the Welcome Bay Community Centre, Tauranga. Or private groups by arrangement. ACC-REGISTERED RONGOĀ MĀORI SERVICE:

13/11/2025

The body is the keeper of all experiences/stories that get locked into the cellular memory of the body. The negative ones (trauma), if not liberated over many years, can manifest into illnesses, diseases or injuries fueled by the negative internal chatter. The person isn’t anchored in their body; their thoughts are flying like a kite way up in Ranginui. Mental clarity becomes cloudy and vision becomes narrow.

The Riri (anger, resentment, hate) and fear irritate the body. It creates resistance and disharmony. A feeling of being ‘stuck’. The body becomes stagnant and congested. Stagnant waters mean paru (dirty) waters. Nothing is flowing, including energy.

Trauma rewires the nervous system; it reshapes the hormones; it recodes your immune system. So many physical bodily functions are affected along with wairua, hinengaro and whānau.

The reason why these blow out of control is disconnection and the person's diminished sense of self-worth and value which had been violated. Along with their mana & mauri. Self-care is the furthest thing from their mind in these states of being.

Healing is a lifelong journey, not a sprint. So, pressure needs to be taken off trying to heal by a certain date. One step at a time is still forward movement, and consistent movement is the winning ticket. The level of movement will vary depending on the motivation to commit to daily self-care routines/rituals. What’s your why?

The negative chatter has spent enough time hogging the limelight. The missing factor for change is compassion and love for self. For that to happen, we need to start busting down those deep core belief systems & negative thought patterns.

So where to start?... Connecting back to self! Because in the realm of disconnection is unwellness.

The first question I ask someone is “how often do you walk barefoot on Papatūānuku (Earth Mother – the ground)”?

It still amazes me how many people don’t or rarely do it. This is the first ‘tool’ to add to your toolbox. How often? Daily if you can. Even if it’s just 10min. We’ll kōrero about the power of grounding in the next post.

Always remember, love is the healer; you are the healer, and it starts with compassion for all that you have been through. Lead with this and freedom will be yours.

Nau mai, haere mai ki te whare o...
🦋"Te Rere o te Pūrerehua" 🦋
The Flight of the Butterfly.

A journey from darkness into the light, guided by the traditions of Romiromi, Mirimiri & Mahi Rākau. A space where people are supported to remember the true healer is already within.

A sacred, grounded space where transformation can take flight. Like the Pūrerehua, each person who enters is seen as being in a process of change. Arriving with a story held in the body & leaving more light & free, a sense of peace & more aligned with their true essence.

Ko te wairua te tuatahi
Ko te tinana te kawe i ngā kōrero
Ko te aroha hei rongoā.

Mai i te marino, ke te nekeneke
Mai i te mamae, ki te tuku
Mai i te taumaha, ki te māmā.

Spirit comes first
The body carries the story
Love is the medicine.

From stillness to movement
From pain to release
From heaviness to light.

Kia ora Koutou

Our Bi-monthly practice of Mahi Raakau is on this month - OCTOBER! FEET & TORSO.
Registrations are now open.

The use of the Raakau, in all its ways and means, is a tool to help people discover the places and parts of the body that are challenged. It will always move the user to some level of understanding and knowing of oneself that may have been forgotten or thought one lacked.
The work may trigger memories, injuries, past life patterns. It’s not about causing pain; it’s about awakening the body, mind & spirit.

Max capacity will be 20 people. Raakau will be provided. But for those wanting to bring their own raakau, here are the measurements.
You will need TWO sizes:
25mm diameter by 600mm length
40mm diameter by 600mm length

When:
SUNDAY 19TH OCTOBER 2025
1pm start till 3.30pmish. Includes a light snack afterwards.
Where:
Welcome Bay Community Centre (Behind the Hall)
242 Welcome Bay Road, Tauranga.
Cost:
KOHA ENTRY (Please koha a reflection of the energy exchanged & to cover costs - ngā mihi 🙏)

TO REGISTER:
megsbodyworx@gmail.com
By EMAIL ONLY if you know you can commit to the wānanga date so that I can keep track of numbers. Also indicate if you will be bringing your own raakau or will need to borrow 1 or both.

I thank you all for your support & belief in the mahi. And for having the faith & courage to step forward to honour yourself.

Thank you always to the Welcome Bay Community Centre for your support.

Welcome to share. I look forward to seeing you soon.
