Why Respite Care?
Everyone needs a break from time to time and you as a carer is no different. Full time caring is stressful and exhausting. It is important for you to take time out to care for your own physical and mental wellbeing, rest and relief, as well as taking a break from your responsibilities.
A break with respite care is often beneficial for your loved one. It could provide social interactions and opportunities for them to pursue hobbies and interests, and to form new friendships.
Whether respite care is planned or due to an emergency situation, there is relief in knowing that your loved one is content in a safe and familiar care setting.

Rosalie Pretorius RN
Qualified Comprehensive & Mental Health Nurse

I qualified as a Registered Nurse in South Africa, while working there I was awarded the Durban City Council Gold medal award for my care with vulnerable patients, young and old.
In 2002, my family and I immigrated to Tauranga, The Bay of Plenty DHB had established a new role in Mental Health for Older Person’s at Tauranga Public hospital. My role was as the community liaison nurse, assisting rest home staff develop strategies and education of staff in managing their dementia clients. I also liaised between the care facilities and the psychiatric team.
In 2016, we moved to Paraparaumu. A short stint working in care facilities reinforced my awareness of the fierce independence of many of the elderly and their resistance towards using respite in-care facilities.
I decided to set up a care facility in my home, based on the model of care from small respite facilities in Tauranga, which offer really good practice of dementia care.
I love cooking, baking and working in my garden and I promote clients maintaining their independence for as long as possible.
