Cases of respiratory illness such as Covid-19 and influenza are on the rise as the days get colder, with hospital admissions for severe respiratory illness increasing.
The annual influenza season usually happens between May and October, and we are not yet near the peak of the illness which is expected in July or August but we are already seeing a significant increase in Influenza cases.
It is recommended for people to access the seasonal influenza ( flu) vaccine to protect themselves and whanau members. For many this vaccine is funded. It is encouraged for many to get the covid booster at the same time as covid cases are also rising caused by a new variant
While most cold and flu symptoms can be managed at home some people get vey sick with influenza and it can cause serious complications.
People at higher risk of getting complications from influenza (flu) include:
Pregnant people and those who have just given birth
People with an ongoing health condition like asthma, diabetes, cancer, heart or lung conditions and conditions that affect the nervous or immune systems
Significantly overweight people
Māori and Pacific peoples aged 55 and over
