The umbilical cord contains 3 vessels.
πŸ“
There are two arteries and one vein.
πŸ“
A lot of people think it’s basically just a β€œtube” of sorts transporting nutrients to their baby. But, it’s so much more intricately designed than that!
πŸ“
The vein carries oxygenated and nutrient-rich blood to your baby, and the arteries carry the deoxygenated blood, waste products (such as carbon dioxide), and nutrient-depleted blood through the placenta and into your bloodstream to dispose of.
πŸ“
After delivery, these vessels close by themselves. The arteries close first due to their muscular walls.
πŸ“
The umbilical vein follows closely behind, allowing oxygenated blood to return to your baby from the placenta. πŸ“
At birth, the placenta contains 1/3 of your baby’s blood volume.
πŸ“
By delaying cord clamping for several minutes, you are allowing that blood to be transferred to your baby where it belongs via the umbilical vein.

We at Nikau Midwives want to assure you that we will continue to provide full pregnancy, birth, and postnatal care to you during this uncertain period as Omicron expands within our community.

Our priority is to provide safe healthcare while minimising the risk of transmission of this virus between the families for whom we provide care. As a group all Nikau Midwives are fully vaccinated and have contingency plans in place if your midwife is needing to self-isolate and will prioritise care as resources allow.

Therefore, we would like to put the following safety measures in place:

- Zoom or phone appointments where there is no clinical indication for a face-to-face appointment.
- Medical grade masks to be worn by all parties present – no cloth masks please
- Minimising number of people at home appointments
- Home appointments to be outside if possible
- Please continue to receive your Covid vaccines and boosters as recommended by the Ministry of Health

We will also be asking the following screening questions prior to appointments:

- In the past 10 days have you tested positive for COVID-19
- In the past 10 days have you and anyone in your household had contact with someone who has COVID-19
- In the past 10 days have you been at a location which now requires you to self-isolate?
- In the past 10 days have you returned from overseas?
- Do you have a new cough, fever, cold, or flu like symptoms?

We are also aware that as case numbers increase within our community that hospital access may be reduced. As such low risk, well women will be recommended that you birth in Kapiti at our fabulous maternity unit or at home. This will also reduce your potential exposure to unwell people at the hospital. This does not restrict access to hospital care for any complications.

Please do not hesitate to call our freephone 0800464528 with your LMCs extension for any urgent concerns.

Please stay safe, continue to surround yourselves with love, and enjoy the excitement of welcoming a new member into your family.

We know that a lot of families will be feeling uncertain about the change to red under the traffic light system and how this could potentially affect birth plans.

As per the below link from the CCDHB please be reassured that there are no changes to maternity services in our region at this time.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has today announced that all of New Zealand will move into the Red light COVID-19 setting at 11.59pm tonight (Sunday 23 January 2022).
