Your waist measurement is an indicator of the level of internal fat deposits that coat the heart, kidneys, liver, digestive organs and pancreas.

This can increase the risk of heart disease and stroke.

What does my measurement mean?

Your heart health could be at risk if your waist size is:
Men: Over 94cm
Women: Over 80cm

If you are concerned, visit your GP for a heart health check ❤️

The human body is made up of more than 60% water, so it is vital to replenish with water as often as possible 💧

Hydration is also paramount for the health of our vital organs, such as the heart. Keeping the body hydrated helps the heart pump blood more efficiently through the blood vessels to the muscles ❤️

As a general rule males need about 10 cups (2.6 litres) of fluids every day. Females need about 8 cups (2.1 litres) of fluids a day — add another cup a day if you're pregnant or breastfeeding 🤰

Children need about 4 to 5 cups of fluids a day.

The food we eat directly links to our overall health, including our heart health ❤️

A varied and balanced diet will help to improve cognitive function, sleep, mood and fitness, while also protecting you against chronic disease.

What does a healthy diet look like?

Eating a well-balanced diet means eating a variety of foods from each of the five food groups daily, in the recommended amounts. This includes:

🥬 vegetables and legumes or beans – at least 5 serves a day
🍞 grain (cereal) foods, mostly wholegrain and high-fibre varieties – 4 to 6 serves a day
🍓 fruit – 2 serves a day
🍗 lean meats and poultry, fish, eggs, tofu, nuts, seeds, and legumes or beans – 2.5 to 3 serves a day
🥛 dairy and alternatives (mostly reduced fat) – 2.5 to 4 serves a day.

Drop a ❤️ if you are planning to eat cleaner this year!

Heat exhaustion can lead to heatstroke, which is a medical emergency. If you see a person suffering from heatstroke, call Triple One (111) immediately 🚑

Heat exhaustion tips:
✅ If it is a hot day, always wear SPF 50+ sunscreen to protect your skin from any sunburn, which can lead to dehydration 🥵

✅ If you are doing physical activity in the heat and find that your heart is pounding and you are gasping for air, stop all activity.

✅ Find a cool place to rest in the shade and drink water to replenish the fluids you have lost in the sweat.

Heatstroke tips:
✅ Call Triple One (111)
✅ Remove unnecessary clothing like socks, shoes, jackets
✅ Wet skin with cool water
✅ If the person becomes unconscious, lay them on their side and ensure they are breathing
✅ If the person is not breathing, perform CPR until medical help arrives 🚑

BMI (Body Mass Index) is one of several tools a health professional will use to work out your risk of heart attack and stroke.

*BMI alone is not a good indicator of your heart health or overall health.*

Your BMI should be used in conjunction with other heart disease risk factors including your blood pressure and cholesterol, smoking status as well as personal and family health history.

Find out more about your risk of heart disease by seeing your GP.

Can you use a CellAED if the casualty has been submerged in water?

An AED should not be used around water as the device produces an electrical shock to the heart, and water can cause physical harm to both the patient and the person assisting in the emergency.

If the casualty is pulled from the water, stripped of their wet clothes and have a dry chest area, it is then safe to use an AED in most circumstances.

Here's your timely reminder to Slip, Slop, Slap, Seek and Slide this Summer 😎

Excessive sun exposure is not all sunshine later on in life - the risk of developing various skin diseases are far too high ☀️

There are two main types of skin cancer – melanoma and non-melanoma. Melanoma is the most serious kind of skin cancer and New Zealand has the highest incidence rate in the world 🚑

So please wear 50+ sunscreen, hat, sunglasses and protective wear, and seek shelter where possible.

Several weeks ago, New Zealand’s new government announced it would scrap the country’s world-leading law to ban smoking for future generations to help pay for tax cuts – a move that public health officials believe will cost thousands of lives.

In 2022 the country passed world-leading legislation which introduced a steadily rising smoking age to stop those born after January 2009 from ever being able to legally buy ci******es.
