Well OK… but these are something else. Anne et Valentin’s Well OK frames aren’t made to blend in, they’re made to spark conversations, turn heads, and maybe stir up a little frame envy.

With bold lines, playful curves and a whole lot of personality, they’re perfect for anyone who likes their eyewear with a bit of attitude.

Are they for everyone? Probably not. But if you know, you know. In-store now.

What is Keratoconus?

Keratoconus is an eye condition that affects the cornea, the clear, dome-shaped front surface of the eye. In a healthy eye, the cornea is round. With Keratoconus, it gradually thins and begins to bulge into a cone shape.

This irregular shape prevents light from focusing properly on the retina, leading to blurred or distorted vision, increased light sensitivity, and frequent changes in prescription.

It often begins in the teens or early twenties and may progress over time. In its early stages, glasses or contact lenses can help. In more advanced cases, specialised lenses or procedures like corneal cross-linking may be recommended to slow progression and preserve vision.

Early diagnosis is key. If you’ve noticed sudden changes in your vision or are struggling with frequent prescription updates, it’s worth having your corneas checked.

Sure, the plot might be all about F1 and fast cars but can we take a moment for Javier Bardem in Cutler and Gross in the 1394 Optical frames? Impeccable.

We’ve always believed your eyewear should feel like you – not just follow a trend.

That’s why we choose to work with independent eyewear designers who care about the same things we do: craftsmanship, individuality and doing things properly. From Paris to Japan, these makers put genuine heart into every frame – no mass production, no shortcuts.

Every piece we bring in is chosen not just for how it looks, but for the story it tells and the people behind it. Because when you wear independent eyewear, you’re not just wearing glasses – you’re backing creativity, design and real craft.

Meet Daehyun Jin (DJ), one of our passionate and highly skilled Optometrists at Mortimer Hirst.

DJ’s journey into Optometry started with a surprising moment, after failing his AA driving eye test. That visit to a local Optometrist sparked a deeper appreciation for the impact eye care has on people’s lives. Later, during health science studies in Dunedin, an inspiring talk from an Optometrist cemented his goal: to help people see better and live better.

Now with a Bachelor of Optometry (Hons) from the University of Auckland and fluency in English and Korean, DJ is known for his compassionate approach and clinical expertise, especially in contact lenses, keratoconus, and high myopia. His time working in Northland also gave him valuable experience managing more complex eye conditions.

Outside the clinic, you’ll find him on the badminton court, golf course, or out fishing with friends.
