Lesley is a Registered Dental Hygienist, a licensed health profession. I graduated 25+ years ago from an accredited college for a Diploma in Dental Hygiene from Niagara College, Ontario Canada. I was the recipient of the Hu Friedy Golden Scaler Award (1998) for the highest clinical marks. I currently work in a friendly & professional dental practice in Rösrath, Germany. I am one of 5 perio-focused

dental hygienists (dentalhygienikerin). I worked in a general dentist practice in Auckland New Zealand for 19 years, treating dental clients of all ages from 3 to 90+. The first four years of my profession I worked full-time with a general dentist working with two other dental hygienists in the practice and I also worked part-time at a Periodontal Practice in St. Catharines, Ontario alongside five other dental hygienists and two Periodontists. It is at the Perio office where I honed my clinical skills and scaling and root planing expertise. This set me up nicely for moving overseas to Auckland New Zealand where I had worked the entire 19 years that I had been in NZ at a downtown in Auckland CBD. I worked full-time five days a week at Queen Street Dental working alongside with two fantastic dental hygienists and two incredible dentists who share the same philosophy of care and are prevention focused as myself. We all shared the same ethical approach to patient-care and practice state-of the art dentistry and prevention. I received my training and certificate to administer Local Anaesthetic at AUT (Auckland) in 2008. I am extremely passionate about caring for my dental clients and helping them achieve healthy teeth and gums for life. I love to educate and inform people about how to clean their teeth properly with the most useful dental appliances appropriate for each individual. Clients love my upbeat, helpful and positive nature and they especially love their healthy and clean mouths after I have scaled and polished their teeth. I love the outdoors and have tramped/hiked all over New Zealand's back-country trails, as well as having hiked all throughout the Canadian Rockies, the French Pyrenees, Corsica GR20 trail and in the Swiss Alps doing the 2-week 200km Haute Route from Chamonix France to Zermatt Switzerland & on a solo trek, I circumnavigated the Matterhorn over 9-days crossing glaciers and climbing over 3000m per day. I have also enjoyed cycle-touring all over the South Island of New Zealand several times. I am also a competitive marathon runner (having competed in 50 marathons and winning four of them and often placing in the top 3). I enjoy ultra marathon running and have competed in 9 Ironman distance triathlons. At the age of 45, I won my first 100km ultramarathon at Taupō in 2017. I am also passionate about boxing fitness and Iyengar yoga. Living a healthy life-style, eating primarily a vegetarian-based diet and caring for my own teeth and overall health has helped me inspire and motivate many of my dental clients to make healthy choices for themselves. A DENTAL HYGIENIST is a licensed dental professional who is registered with a dental association or regulatory body within their country of practice. They are a primary healthcare professional who works independent of, or alongside dentists and other dental professionals in a team to provide full oral health care. They have the training and education that focus and specialise in the prevention and treatment of oral disease. They can choose to work in a range of dental settings from independent practice, private practice, specialists practices to public sector; and can also work in residential aged care facilities. Dental hygienists have a specific scope of clinical procedures they provide to their patients. They assess a patient's condition in order to offer patient-specific preventative and educational services to promote and maintain good oral health. The use of therapeutic methods assists their patients in controlling oral disease, while providing tailored treatment plans that emphasize the importance of behavioral changes. In most jurisdictions, hygienists work for a dentist or dental specialist, and some are licensed to administer local anesthesia and perform dental radiography.[4] The major role of a dental hygienist is to perform periodontal therapy which includes things such periodontal charting, periodontal debridement (scaling and root planing), prophylaxis (cleaning) for patients with periodontal disease. In addition dental hygienists are able to perform examinations, make diagnosis, take intraoral radiographs, dental sealants, administer fluoride, and provide patient specific oral hygiene instruction. They are also able to work at an orthodontic clinic and can perform many tasks there. Such as selecting and sizing of orthodontic bands for dental braces, the removal of orthodontic appliances and are able to make dental impressions for the construction of study casts and mouthguards. Dental hygienists work together with other dental professionals, with a higher number working at general practices with dentists, Dental therapists and oral health therapists. A smaller number work at specialist practices alongside orthodontists and periodontists. They help with the contribution of an interdisciplinary approach, aiming to provide optimum oral health care to their patients. Dental hygienists also aim to work interprofessionally to provide holistic oral health care in the best interest of their patient. Dental hygienists also offer expertise in their field and can provide a dental hygiene diagnosis, which is an integral component of the comprehensive dental diagnosis. Other areas that relate to dentistry that dental hygienists can be involved in are:

• Research: They can carry out clinical studies and trials alongside specialists in teaching institutions.

• Professional education: They are able to provide education by teaching and training dental hygiene students and dental assistants. They can also choose to present research at a variety of different events and seminars within their industry.

• Community health: They provide assistance and group talks in community dental clinics, residential care, hospitals and nursing homes. For example: helping clients that suffer from medical and mental disorders.

• Military dentistry: They are able to provide dental care to service members and their dependents or to civilians during humanitarian disasters.

• Marketing and sales: They can promote dental products and services through dental companies as a dental company representative.

Dental Hygienists are integral to the codiagnosis process and play a crucial role in preserving cornerstone teeth. Through thorough assessments, effective communication, and a commitment to patient education, we can help maintain the integrity of these essential teeth and ensure our patients enjoy a lifetime of optimal oral health.

Cornerstone teeth are the first molars and canines. These teeth act as the main support system for the bite and to hold the shape of the arch. They’re essential for several reasons.

Dental Hygienists are often the first providers to notice subtle changes in a patient’s oral health as they spend the most time with patients. This places us in a unique position to collaborate with dentists in codiagnosing problems before they become severe.

There's a good chance most patients haven't heard that cornerstone teeth are their most important teeth. It's time to educate them.
