It would appear that Auckland feet are doing it hard at the moment and have been needing to visit Greenlane Osteopathy: the slip in socks crunching a big toe into the step riser, a soccer player falling on top of the twisted ankle, the foot and shin protesting against an increase in the marathon training distance, a night dancing in killer-high shoes, and an ever-lurking plantar faciitis πŸ˜•πŸ™β˜ΉοΈ

Buddy-strapping an injured toe can provide support and protect an injured toe during healing, RICE for sprains, rest and focused stretches for over-training strains, flats if you are going to dance the night away, and rolling the sole of the foot over a firm ball (a cold beer bottle works too πŸ˜†) are some of the ways lower extremity injuries can be managed at home. And then osteopathic treatment to get you back to the action sooner πŸ˜‰

Back from holidays but feeling a bit meh after a summer of indulgence? You may benefit from a 'detox'.

Medical issues aside, our bodies are naturally able to detoxify themselves without the need for special diets and supplements. Our bodies' organs of elimination - the liver, kidneys, digestive system, skin, and lungs - when healthy can naturally eliminate toxins and unwanted substances. Some of the ways we can optimise our bodies' detoxification pathways are:
Drink more water Reduce alcohol Reduce intake of sugar, salt and processed foods Eat anti-oxidant rich foods such as berries, fruit, vegetables, nuts and green tea (anti-oxidants protect our cells from damage by molecules called free radicals which are linked to cancer, heart disease, liver disease, asthma and dementia). Eat sulphur-rich foods (onions, garlic, broccoli), add coriander, all of which have been shown to help eliminate heavy metals and chemicals from our systems. Stay active (sweating is our body flexing its' detox muscles)

Freeing up the amount of energy your body spends on elimination, means you have more available to do life well!

MOTION IS LOTION!
During activity, the compressive forces on joint cartilage stimulates the release of synovial fluid to maintain a layer of lubrication on the joint cartilage surfaces. This assists joints to glide smoothly. Exercise also helps to build stamina, improve sleep, reducing fatigue and enhancing energy.
Find a form of movement that you love doing over the summer holidays and do a little each day πŸ’ƒπŸš΄β€β™€οΈβ›ΉοΈβ€β™€οΈπŸ€Έβ€β™‚οΈ

Tight glute muscle can be a literal pain in the a..... !

To ease tightness and pain through the buttock/outer hip area, try this stretch:

1. Lie on your back with knees bent and your feet flat on the floor.
2. Cross your right ankle over your left knee, keeping the right knee bent.
3. Reach forward to clasp the back of your left thigh, gently drawing it toward you until you feel a mild stretch in the outer right hip. Don't overdo it, pain is not gain!
4. Hold for 7-10 breaths, relaxing and releasing tension in the outer hip with each out breath.
5. Repeat on the other side.

It is not uncommon to find that you are tighter though one hip.

Sleep is a cornerstone of health and nights when we have poor sleep, can leave us feeling out of sorts for the whole of the next day.

One factor that impacts sleep is alcohol which is a nervous system depressant. While alcohol induces relaxation and sleepiness, it can disrupt your sleep cycle and quality of sleep.

As the social season looms you can mitigate the negative effects of alcohol on your sleep by allowing the body time to metabolise and clear alcohol from your system. Reducing the amount you drink and stopping all alcoholic beverages at least 4h before bedtime will help to reduce sleep disruptions. Sweet dreams πŸ₯±πŸ˜΄

Did you know that as part of their training osteopaths are able to identify and treat breathing issues.

If your asthma is playing up, if you have been coughing for an extended period of time, or feel as if you are not breathing optimally and want to feel more comfortable when exercising, it may be time for a treatment πŸ™‚

Using a variety of techniques, rib movement can be improved, tension released through the diaphragm (our main breathing muscle) making breathing easier and more efficient.

Feel free to get in touch if you would like to discuss your personal circumstances.

Congratulations to those young and old that rose bright and early on Sunday morning to take part in the Auckland Marathon!

Well done also to the ABs for a hard-fought game even if the result was not as hoped (😒)

The sun is shining, the birds are singing, grass and weeds are growing at speed and there are all those seedlings to plant!

Many gardeners will be spending more time in their gardens over Labour Weekend (as will I) and here are a few tips to help you remain injury free:

🌺 Warm up with some gentle movements of your neck, back, hips, knees and wrists before hoeing into it
🌻 Mix jobs up to avoid repetitive strains - a whole day spent trimming high hedges, only pruning, or digging for extended periods of time is less tolerable to our bodies than varying tasks that require different actions
🌷Watch your lifting. Face your load straight-on, use your legs to raise yourself up, hold your load close to your body and centre of gravity to reduce strain on your back ... and don't be shy about asking for help with heavier tasks πŸ’ͺ
🌼Get a kneeling mat if you are kneeling to do a lot of ground level work to avoid aggravation and inflammation of the knee joints and knee caps.

Wishing everyone a relaxing Labour Weekend, whichever way you choose to spend it

Many knee problems occur due to an imbalance in the muscles that move the knee joint, and the knee cap over the knee joint. If muscles are too tight on one side of the joint it will affect the way the joint hinges. Tight quads may cause the knee cap to be compressed into the joint causing inflammation and pain.
A few stretches can go a long way to keeping your knees happy and healthy 😊. See the short video for knee/hip stretches on our website https://www.greenlaneosteopathy.co.nz/faqs-selfhelp
