What an incredible evening last week, celebrating the very best of Aotearoa’s cheesemaking industry at the 2026 NZ Champions of Cheese Awards.

Over the past 30 years, New Zealand has seen an explosion in the diversity and quality of locally produced cheeses - from European-inspired classics to truly unique creations that showcase our local ingredients and heritage. This year’s awards were a powerful reflection of that growth, with a record-breaking 267 entries judged by an expert panel in Auckland.

It was inspiring to see the innovation, craftsmanship, and passion on display across the industry, and to celebrate the achievements of this creative and rapidly evolving sector. Congratulations to all the winners and participants, in particular, Whitestone Cheese for its Monte Christo being awarded the Champion Commercial Cheese Award.

At Eurofins New Zealand, we’re proud to support the cheese and wider dairy sector with our specialised testing services - helping producers ensure product quality, safety, and consistency from farm to finished product. Today, 22 March, marks World Water Day - a global time to reflect on the vital role water plays in our lives and the urgent need to ensure safe access for all. This year’s theme, “Where water flows, equality grows,” highlights the powerful connection between water, women, and gender equality.

The global water crisis affects everyone - but not equally. In many communities, women and girls bear the greatest burden. They are the ones who collect water, manage its use, and care for those made ill by unsafe supplies. In doing so, they often sacrifice time, education, health, and economic opportunities.

Despite progress, 2.1 billion people worldwide still lack access to safe drinking water. Every day, women and girls spend a combined 250 million hours collecting water - a stark reminder that access to safe water is not just an environmental issue, but a social and economic one too.

At Eurofins Environment Testing, across New Zealand and beyond, our laboratories play a critical role in safeguarding water quality - from drinking water to marine environments. Through rigorous testing, monitoring, and expert analysis, we help ensure the water communities rely on is safe, trusted, and sustainable.

Winter may have the reputation as “mould season,” but in New Zealand, summer can be just as problematic. Warm temperatures, high humidity, and wet weather create ideal conditions for mould to grow quickly.

Mould is a natural part of our environment and usually harmless at low levels. However, when moisture is trapped indoors — from leaks, condensation, or hidden water damage — mould can become aggressive and reveal deeper issues within a building that might otherwise go unnoticed.

With New Zealand’s 2026 summer forecast to bring warmer-than-average, humid conditions under La Niña, mould spores can begin multiplying in as little as 24–48 hours. Certain species, such as Chaetomium, are particularly concerning. This mould flourishes in persistently damp materials, is difficult to remediate once established, and may signal past flooding, structural moisture problems, or design-related vulnerabilities. Left untreated, it can also present serious health concerns.

Early detection makes all the difference.

At Eurofins Environment Testing, we deliver independent, reliable mould testing and identification for both residential and commercial properties. Through air (spore trap) and surface (tape lift) sampling, we help identify issues early — before they escalate into costly or complex problems.

11/12/2025

As PFAS regulation expands and new compounds are identified, environmental professionals face increasing pressure to generate accurate, defensible data from some of the most complex matrices — including wastewater, biosolids, sediments and tissues. Standard methods alone are no longer sufficient. High-precision PFAS work requires specialised instrumentation, rigorous QA/QC, and analysts experienced in managing matrix interferences and trace-level detection.

At Eurofins, our PFAS teams are equipped to meet these challenges head-on.

We provide:
· Gold-standard isotope dilution methods (US EPA) for reliable quantification across drinking water, surface water, groundwater, biosolids, and sediment
· Dedicated LC-MS/MS platforms with controlled preparation environments to minimise background PFAS and cross-contamination
· High resolution accurate mass LC-QToF-MS and GC-QToF-MS for identification of unknown PFAS compounds
· Capability to analyse emerging PFAS including GenX, ADONA, and other perfluoroether carboxylic acids (PFECA)
· Compliance with Table B-15 of QSM 5.3 (US DoD) ensuring stringent QA/QC criteria and defensible results

PFAS testing isn’t just about meeting requirements — it’s about staying ahead of them. With Eurofins’ expertise, instrumentation, and evolving methodologies, you can trust the data behind your decisions.

On we shine a spotlight on one of our planet’s most valuable yet often overlooked resources: soil. Healthy soil underpins resilient ecosystems, sustainable food systems, and the wellbeing of our communities.

This year’s theme “Healthy Soils for Healthy Cities” highlights the vital role soil plays in creating greener, more resilient urban environments. In cities, healthy soil regulates temperature, improves water infiltration to reduce flooding, supports urban agriculture, filters pollutants, and stores carbon to enhance air quality. But when soil is sealed beneath concrete and asphalt, these essential functions are lost — making cities more vulnerable to overheating, pollution, and extreme weather.

World Soil Day reminds us that creating thriving cities starts from the ground up. Everyone — planners, policymakers, developers, and communities — has a role in rethinking how we value and manage urban soils.

But how do we ensure soil health isn’t just a buzzword, but a measurable reality? Eurofins Agro is going beyond just talking about soil health — we measure it. With our scalable system, our soil experts provide actionable insights into the physical, biological, chemical, carbon capture, and contamination aspects of soil.

By doing so, we empower:
· Urban and industrial planners to improve soil sustainability
· Mitigate contamination risks
· Support greener, healthier urban spaces
· Enhance climate resilience through better land-use decisions

Healthy soils mean healthier crops, cleaner water, stronger biodiversity, and a better future for all. Together, we can drive the transition to sustainable soil stewardship and ensure that every stakeholder contributes to the UN Sustainable Development Goals ( ). Healthy soil is needed to achieve at least 8 of the 17 SDGs!

For more information on how our Agro team in New Zealand can support you visit: https://lnkd.in/gAMNAPYD - Whether you’re restoring urban landscapes, planning green infrastructure, or managing land sustainably, our team is here to help.

This week, the Eurofins Wellington Lab team undertook a dedicated clean-up activity around our laboratory at 85 Port Road, Seaview. Situated directly on the waterfront and bordering the harbour, this location provides us with a daily reminder of the importance of protecting our natural environment.

In just 30 minutes, 22 team members contributed a combined 11 hours to removing litter from the surrounding streets and foreshore area. Their efforts have helped ensure the space around our facility is cleaner, safer, and more welcoming as we approach the summer season.

At Eurofins, we remain committed to supporting the communities in which we operate and to participating in initiatives that promote long-term environmental stewardship. This activity reflects our ongoing dedication to contributing positively to the places where we live and work.

A groundbreaking global study, led by the Eurofins Environment Testing Microplastics Peer Group has uncovered alarming levels of microplastic pollution in the air. In some urban areas, deposition rates have reached up to 1,300 microplastic particles per square meter per day.

As part of the PlasticDustCloud project — one of the most comprehensive and harmonised investigations of its kind — air samples were collected from 12 sampling sites in nine countries on three continents. The study used a standardised sampling approach and multiple detection technologies to generate comparable global data and highlight the environmental relevance of airborne microplastics. It also evaluated how different analytical methods influence reported microplastic concentrations.

Sampling was conducted from June to August 2024 using an identical wet–dry deposition method (AS/NZS 3580.10.1:2016). Parallel samples at each site were analysed using five analytical techniques, including vibrational spectroscopy and thermoanalytical methods. Sites with dedicated microplastics laboratories also analysed triplicate samples to assess reproducibility. Strict QA/QC protocols — including procedural blanks and laboratory control samples — ensured robust and contamination-controlled results.

The findings underscore the pervasive presence of microplastics in the air we breathe and the need for standardised analytical workflows.

Further details on sampling methods, results, and locations can be accessed on the project website:
