A huge thank you to Sarah Corson from the Painga Project and her colleague Bec KauKau for joining us for last week's lunchtime learning session 🙌

Bec shared powerful insights from her work alongside communities and schools, while Sarah spoke about the kaupapa behind the project and its special, long-standing relationship with The Hearing House.

We were lucky to witness something truly special at The Hearing House recently - our new Speech Language Therapist, Valentina, receiving her sign name from Natasha Cloete of Deaf Aotearoa ❤️

A sign name is a deeply meaningful taonga within the Deaf community, reflecting a person’s identity and connection. Thank you, Natasha, for this beautiful gesture and for continuing to build bridges of connection and understanding in our mahi.

This week, we remember someone whose quiet courage helped shape the future of hearing in Aotearoa.

Florence Woodward, the first person in New Zealand to receive a cochlear implant, passed away peacefully on Monday 4 August 2025.

Florence never sought the spotlight, but her legacy speaks volumes. Her pioneering surgery in 1986 opened the door for thousands of others to reconnect with sound. In 2015, she was reunited with the team who supported her through that journey: ENT surgeons Bill Baber and Ron Goodey, and audiologist Dr Bill Keith. It was a powerful moment of reflection and respect.

Her positivity, her background in teaching, and her generous spirit made Florence an important part of the early cochlear implant programme. Those who worked with her speak of her with deep admiration and warmth. We remember Florence not just for what she helped make possible, but for who she was — kind, grounded and quietly strong.

Moe mai rā, Florence. You will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.🕊️💛

Nick Jones, one of our talented audiologists at The Hearing House, recently returned to his hometown of Ōtorohanga to share his experience and encouragement with whānau whose children are navigating hearing differences. 👏

Diagnosed as profoundly deaf as a baby and one of the first children in Aotearoa to receive a cochlear implant, Nick now supports others through our mobile hearing clinic, bringing our specialised services directly to communities in Cambridge and Ōtorohanga.

His inspiring story was recently featured in King Country News, as well as in recent issues of Te Awamutu News and Cambridge News.

For quarter of a century, Quota Papakura has been a powerful force behind The Hearing House—funding resources, volunteering time, and supporting the next generation of audiologists. 💙

Past scholarship and study grant recipients have included our very own team members: lead audiologist Caroline, and audiologists Bri and Derek.

Whether bringing Christmas cheer or backing groundbreaking research, Quota’s support touches every part of our work.

Ngā mihi nui to Quota Papakura for being part of our journey. 🙌

Earlier this week, our team took part in a hands-on first aid training session with Nardene from Hato Hone St John!

We practiced CPR, how to respond to choking, treat wounds, and more, focusing on real-life scenarios for babies, children, and adults.

Why? Because we’re committed to keeping our clients and community safe, every step of the way 💛

While many were cursing the rain today in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland, for one of our amazing kiritaki, Annette Barker, it was a moment of quiet joy.

Driving her grandson to school through a heavy downpour, with the wipers going full speed, she suddenly realised something magical: she could hear the rain hitting the windscreen.

It was a sound she hadn’t been able to hear in years, until her cochlear implant made it possible.

“Thanks to The Hearing House and the cochlear implant funders,” Annette says. “Have a great day - and be grateful you can hear the rain. I know I am!”

Sometimes, it’s the little things that mean the most.

Ngā mihi Annette, we’re celebrating this moment with you. ☔💙
