With Petone Community House – I just got recognised as one of their top fans! 🎉

In truth I've been a fan of Petone Community House since the Wellington earthquake of November 14th 2016.

On that day I simultaneously lost access to both of my in-person venues that I used for Hypnotherapy. In Wellington, I lost access to the room I was leasing from Exodus Gym in Tory Street, where the car park had been torn asunder by the quake. Also, I lost access to the room I had been using for Hypnotherapy at StMark's Uniting Congregations Church, in Woburn, Lower Hutt.

Petone Community House welcomed me, and in so doing enabled me to provide my services to clients in Wellington and the Hutt Valley. In many ways they helped me save my business, and I am forever grateful.

Growth by pruning

One of the joys of home ownership is gardening. Over the years it has given me a fresh perspective on growth

There was a time I thought about growth as purely requiring upsizing, such as from low income to high income, small ideas to big ideas and from sole trader to corporate business

What gardening taught me, that I hadn't previously appreciated, was that growth can also be achieved by pruning

Pruning is very cathartic, and also an art form. It involves getting rid of old leaves and branches that are not flourishing, so that those left behind can make more efficient use of the available nutrients, and so can flourish

Beyond gardening, life in general presents many opportunities for pruning too.

There are many things we collect over the years, which at some point in life we may no longer need - Habits, beliefs, superstitions, out of date feelings etc, all of which can hold us back.

Pruning them from your life can free up time, energy, money, and take the weight off your mind, so that you can enjoy the garden of life to the full.

Think about it -
* What if you can prune away fear, and grow confidence in its place?
* What if you can prune away pain and instead grow comfort?
* What if you can prune away unhealthy eating habits and grow healthy ones to replace them?

Make it a NOvember
Halloween has just finished, and there are going to be fireworks next week, followed by the inexorable move into the festive season and Summer holidays.
But are you ready for it?
If you're seeing what I'm seeing, then there's lots of temptation out there
Temptation to eat too much, at BBQs, family gatherings, work and social functions
Temptation to drink too much, at those same events
Temptation to spend too much, paying for all that food and drink, whilst also buying gifts for friends and whanau at Christmas
Temptation to smoke or v**e too much, to deal with the stress of all the above
Temptation to get angry with yourself or others because all this is happening
Temptation to get fearful for the future
Temptation to work too many hours, just to pay for it all..and so on...
Did you know there's a simple, two letter word to describe a process that can help you to deal with all this and more?
The word is "NO"

Scarcity leads to scare city

I saved this post until Halloween, after finding this great GIF to make my point. The guy in the chair wasn't scared of a floating blanket when he thought there was a person underneath it. But when he pulled the blanket off, and there was no one underneath it, that's when he got scared - by the scarcity of what he expected to find, which in this case was a person.

But looking beyond this GIF, scarcity causes a fear response that changes our behaviour all the time. Here's what I mean...

Imagine walking past a shop window and seeing something you quite like on display - maybe it's a hat, or a coat, or a bag?
It could be anything really. The next day you walk past the same window display, and the next, and the next. So far, so good. You like what you see, but are not motivated enough to go in and buy it. Then one day you are about to walk past that same window display again, but you notice something else has joined it. It's a sign, displaying the words "2 Day Sale - While Stocks Last" Now this is is a game changer. The words "2 Day Sale" imply a scarcity of time, and the words "While Stocks Last" imply a scarcity of stock. Wham! Wham! a double dose of scarcity (Time and stock) This is when fear kicks in - The scarcity of time and stock leads to a fear of missing out, and that can cause you to go into the shop and buy that item, simply because you don't want to miss out. Shops are very good at this marketing ploy.

Incidentally, once you get home with that hat, coat or bag that you bought out of fear of missing out, there's likely to be some buyer's remorse. Maybe you can go back to the shop for a refund?

This is a fun example of how fear of scarcity (Missing out) can make you act out of fear. But there are so many ways that fear of scarcity can make you act out of fear. A scarcity of time, or of love, or of work, or of self-worth, and many, many more. Sometimes they can lead to phobias too

Scarcity triggers fear, and fear makes you act in ways you don't really want to.

Fear is a horrible thing to live with, or to allow to control you
