Today six of our four year olds went for a hikoi to Pirongia School.

The occassion was supporting our friends during their Whakatau. This is a welcome held by Pirongia School where tamariki and whānau get to meet their new teachers, friends and explore their new learning space!

A very exciting tradition for our wonderful children taking their next step in their learning journeys.

Go well our friends!

Kia ora !
We all want to say a big thankyou for your patience as we navigate the first week of Mountaineers Childcare Pirongia being under new ownership!

This week is all about pukapuka (books). Aligning with the local community book week we have allready had some awesome storytelling, art and activities for the tamariki to participate in!

To further celebrate book week we would love for your children to bring a book to share with their friends and kaiako tomorrow (Thursday the 23rd)

On Friday the 24th we will be celebrating book character day where we encourage the children to come dressed as their favorite book character!

🖤♥️🤍 Te Wiki o te Reo Māori 🤍♥️🖤

At Mountaineers, te ao Māori is woven into our everyday curriculum. You can see, feel, and hear this through karakia, tikanga, kōrero Māori, poi, rākau, waiata, art, and celebrations.

As something special for Te Wiki o te Reo Māori, the Pirongia room explored the legend How Māui Slowed the Sun. Tamariki loved the pukapuka and extended their learning by making their own harakeke rope - just like Māui! Their mahi is proudly displayed on our planning board, have you seen it?🌞

Here’s how these experiences link to Te Whāriki:

Mana Aotūroa | Explore: explore with harakeke, art, and storytelling.

Mana Reo | Communicate: use te reo Māori in stories, waiata, and conversations.

Mana Tangata | Contribution: work and learn alongside others.

Mana Atua | Wellbeing: build confidence and cultural pride.

Mana Whenua | Belonging: strengthen connections to Māori culture and the bicultural foundations of Aotearoa.

Through these experiences, tamariki met learning outcomes while engaging deeply with language and culture. Tino pai e hoa mā!

🖤♥️🤍 TE WIKI O TE REO MĀORI

In honour of Māori language week, here’s a fun fact!

🧠 From birth, pēpi have the ability to distinguish sounds from all languages. By around 8 months, their brains are tuning into the languages they’re exposed to - this is called perceptual narrowing.

When we kōrero Māori with our babies, it keeps these sound pathways open, making it easier to learn and speak the reo as they grow.

The good news is, you don’t need to be fluent! Using simple kupu regularly like kia ora (hello), kai (food), puku (tummy) or moe (sleep) makes a difference. Every kupu counts and our babies are listening!

Kia kaha te kōrero Māori! Ake, ake, ake 🖤♥️🤍

This afternoon we had the chance to watch Lindy from Mountain View Honey check on the bee hive 🐝

We saw how the smoke encouraged the bees to move down low in the hive, and also watched as the bees were treated for varroa - pesky mites that can harm their wings.

Next week we’ll get to watch Lindy feed the bees sugar syrup, our tamariki are already ✨buzzing✨ with excitement!
