✨ CLINIC UPDATE ✨

My clinic days are changing from the 12th June, here's what you need to know:

In-person consults will be held every Thursday at a new clinic location in Windsor Park, North Shore.

👉 I have also extended my in person clinic hours - 10am to 7pm.

Online consults can be booked Thursday & Friday.

I still have a few spaces left for appointments in Henderson before I move on, so secure yourself a spot now if seeing someone out West is preferable.Reach out if you have any questions.

You’ve got some pimples that won’t go away, so you overhaul your skincare to the latest acne friendly recommendation’s. Things might even get better for a little bit, but then the spots keep returning. Sound familiar???

It’s a common reaction to skin troubles, but we don’t want to just react to a breakout, we want to uncover the tiggers beneath the skins surface.

First we start at the top, the body’s control centre - the nervous system. Our central nervous system influences the function of all body systems (like gut, immune and hormonal).

Often nurturing our nervous system is ongoing work, but an essential that can’t be overlooked. Once foundational work begins we continue down the hierarchy:


Digestive system (as well as other pathways of elimination via liver, kidneys, lungs).


Hormones (s*x hormones, insulin, DHEAS, cortisol etc)
↘️ Diet & Nutritional repletion **equal importance to hormonal balance

Hydration is one of the most underrated parts of winter skin health — especially if you’re prone to acne, dry patches or barrier issues.

Cold weather, indoor heating and less sweating all mess with how your body regulates moisture — leaving your skin dehydrated from the inside and out. When your skin’s water content drops, it can trigger more oil production (hello, breakouts), impair healing and weaken your barrier.

Here’s how I support hydration in the cooler months:

💧 Electrolytes - add a pinch of mineral salt, squeeze or lime juice or a little coconut water to your water for better absorption. Electrolyte sachets are handy too, just be aware of the sugar content as blood sugar disregulation is a key acne trigger.

🍵 Bone broth - warm, nourishing and packed with skin-loving minerals. Just save your left over frames or bones to cook down next time.

🌿Herbal teas - Nettle, Hibiscus & Oatstraw are mineral rich and easy to infuse herbs, immediately or leave overnight. Spearmint tea is also excellent for hormonal acne.

🥑 Healthy fats - they help lock in moisture from the inside out.

🚿 Avoid long, hot showers – hard to do on cold mornings, but this is a big one for dehydrating the skin even more.

Not sure exactly how much water you need every day?

Simply multiply your body weight (kg) by 0.033 to = L per day (from all sources). A 60kg person will need approx 2.0L/day.

PS: you'll need to increase this if you do high intensity exercise, consume lots of caffeine, take certain medications (diuretics) and are in hot/dry spaces for prolonged periods of time.

Ever noticed more breakouts or sensitivity in winter — even when your skin feels dry?

Here’s what’s actually happening beneath the surface 👇

🥶 Cold air, indoor heating and low humidity dehydrate your skin, stripping away the natural oils (ceramides, cholesterol, fatty acids) that make up your skin barrier — the outermost layer that locks in moisture and keeps out bacteria and irritants.

When that barrier is compromised:

~ Moisture escapes more easily (called transepidermal water loss), leaving your skin tight, flaky and prone to inflammation.

~ Micro-gaps form between skin cells, creating space for acne-causing bacteria like Cutibacterium acnes, and other pathogens to enter and trigger immune and inflammatory responses.

~ Skin pH can shift, disrupting your microbiome and leading to even more reactivity or breakouts.

AND... if you’re still using harsh cleansers or over-exfoliating? You're likely doing more harm than good.

👉 My basic tips:
Focus on barrier-repairing skincare by using gentle, creamy cleansers, non-comedogenic oils (like Jojoba Oil), and hydrating humectants like glycerin or hyaluronic acid. Internally, support your skin with healthy fats, zinc, vitamin A and hydration!!!

The humble oat is a wonderful ally when it comes to supporting general health as well as skin specific conditions 🌾

You can eat it ~ as a great source of soluble fiber, protein & sustained energy.

You can use it topically ~ blend up your own colloidal oat formula to use during bath time for eczema prone skin, or choose natural body care products with oats in the formula.

You can take it as herbal extract (dispensed by a qualified practitioner) ~ to help nourish and strengthen when feeling 'nervey', run down and depleted.

✨ I love that it's versatile, a common pantry staple and is generally well tolerated by even our smallest family members 👶

That figure doesn't include suboptimal levels either BTW!

▫️Deficiency is less 25 nmol/L
▫️Optimal is between 100-150 nmol/L

That's a big gap between deficient and ideal range.

Serum Vitamin D is something I will almost always get a client to test, because it has such an important role in not only how our skin cells grow and mature, but also immune function, levels of inflammation, detoxification pathways....just to name a few.

More often than not, test results reveal low levels so we begin supplementation to correct Vitamin D status.

Haven't had your levels tested but want to get more Vit D?

🌞Vit D is quickly generated in the layers of the skin after UV/sun exposure, so take advantage of the sun shining this winter where you can. Pop on shorts/t-shirt/singlet and have your lunch break outside (if you can bare the cold!).

I’m just a naturopath having a normal human experience, experiencing an acne breakout.

I’ve been reflecting on why, & there’s some clear things that have contributed:

- slacking on water intake
- forgetting to take omega 3’s
- increased stress
- staying up late & having disrupted/poor sleep
- ignoring my hormones (i have endo & adeno, so there’s some work to do)

At the same time, I’ve also been consistent with some good things: taking Vit D & Zinc, daily movement, regular meals, coffee after food & meeting protein requirements especially with breakfast (I’ve found a delicious h**p seed protein powder to add to oats!).

So I’m taking those small wins, not being hard on myself (which is challenging at times because shouldn’t naturopaths have great health all the time?! lol) and acknowledge the areas that need more attention.

My intention with sharing is to remind you to consider what your main area of weakness is.
Hormones? Gut? Stress? Diet?

If it’s unclear what your root cause is, find someone to help 👋🏻.

And… I am proof that only taking a zinc supplement and ignoring your triggers won’t clear up your spots.
