Great to see this acknowledgement of the hard work our kaimahi put in. Super proud of our staff and community working alongside each other to reach 100% immunisation rates for Māori tamariki 🎉

Porirua Union & Community Health Service - PUCHS Seeing the Results of Efforts as Immunisation Rates Soar for Enrolled Population

The Porirua Union and Community Health Services, known as PUCHS, based in Cannons Creek, in partnership with Tū Ora has been thinking outside the box and engaging with their community to improve immunisation rates for Māori and Pacific tamariki. The partnership has seen significant increases in coverage and at the end of March 2024 exceeds 95% for Māori tamariki at the 8 month, 12 month and 24 month milestone ages.

At the beginning of 2023, teams across Tū Ora joined together and launched an immunisation working group to target Māori and Pacific Childhood Immunisations across the enrolled population. This work now complements the government’s recent announcement of a 95% childhood immunisation rate health target for primary care.

Data tracking back to March 2023 saw 8-month and 24-month immunisation for Māori sitting extremely low at 60% and 62.5% respectively. 12-month immunisation rates were at just over 90%. Through various workstreams at the Very Low-Cost Access (VLCA) practice and intense support from Tū Ora, by September 2023, 8-month immunisation sat at 66% and 24 months at 80%. This rose to join the 12-month immunisation rate at 100% in March 2024.

Alison Mitchell, Immunisation Facilitator for Tū Ora who worked closely with PUCHS said she was delighted with the outcome for PUCHS immunisation rate and was impressed at the efforts of all involved in this achievement.

Deputy Chief Executive and Project Sponsor Mabli Jones said it was excellent to see immunisation rates rise and the hard work of the working group paying off.

“As a PHO, I’m proud of the collaboration between Tū Ora and PUCHS to achieve these immunisation rates for Māori in Porirua”.
