What is a Herbalist?

A herbalist is someone who uses plants for their therapeutic properties to support health and wellbeing. We work with the leaves, flowers, roots, seeds, and bark of plants to create remedies that can help address a wide range of health concerns.

As a herbalist, I take a holistic approach, considering not just your symptoms but also your overall constitution, lifestyle, and emotional wellbeing to try and understand the root cause of any imbalances. I use a deep understanding of plant actions and energetics, often drawing on traditional knowledge alongside modern research, to select the most appropriate herbs for your individual needs.

Here in my clinic, I work with a variety of herbal preparations, which might include teas, tinctures (liquid extracts), capsules, creams, and ointments, depending on what's best for you. The aim is to support your body's natural ability to heal and restore balance using the gentle yet powerful properties of the plant kingdom.

HERBAL SPOTLIGHT!!

🌸Chamomile 🌸is one of the most widely used and well-loved herbs globally, primarily celebrated for its profoundly calming and soothing properties.
Chamomile's most famous use is as a gentle nervine (a herb that supports the nervous system), and is highly beneficial for the entire digestive tract due to its soothing and anti-inflammatory actions.

🌸Anxiety and Stress: It is widely used to relieve general anxiety, tension, and mild stress. The compound apigenin is believed to bind to GABA receptors in the brain, similar to mild anti-anxiety medications, promoting relaxation without causing heavy sedation.

🌸Sleep Aid: It is an excellent mild sedative used to combat insomnia, promote deeper rest, and reduce nighttime waking. A warm cup of chamomile tea before bed is a classic natural remedy for improving sleep quality.

🌸Soothing Spasms: It is considered an antispasmodic, meaning it helps to relax the smooth muscles of the digestive system. This makes it effective for easing symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), cramps, indigestion, and bloating.

🌸Reducing Inflammation: It helps to reduce inflammation and irritation in the mucosal lining of the stomach and intestines. This makes it useful for managing conditions like gastritis and can help soothe acid reflux.

We can use on babies and small children - which can make powerful chnges! If you would like to try some of this amazing herb as a tincture, reach out, even a few drops per day could assist your body.

Herbal Medicine - How can it help supports the "Flu"

Herbal remedies work on two main fronts: building up your body’s natural defences and directly easing the uncomfortable symptoms that make you feel so under the weather.

🌿Immune Modulation: Certain herbs are classified as immune tonics or immunostimulants. They don't just "boost" the system; they help the immune system communicate more effectively and mount a quicker, more efficient response when a virus is detected. They are most effective when taken right at the very first sign of feeling unwell.

🌿Symptom Relief: Herbs contain powerful compounds that can naturally reduce inflammation, soothe irritated tissues, and act as gentle expectorants (to help clear mucus), offering relief without some of the side effects of over-the-counter medications.

Key Herbs to Keep in Your Cupboard
When dealing with a viral illness, a few specific herbs really shine and you may have some already in the house!

🍒Elderberry (Sambucus nigra): Elderberry is truly a fantastic herb, especially when we're looking for support against viruses and that uncomfortable excess mucus in the sinus area. It works in some clever ways, but one of its brilliant actions is that it can actually coat a virus, making it much harder for it to attach to the delicate mucosal layers in your sinuses. This significantly reduces the possibility of you becoming unwell.

🌸Echinacea: This is the classic herb for acute immune support. It is thought to increase the number of immune cells and enhance their activity, effectively helping your body overwhelm the invading virus more quickly.

🧄Garlic (Allium sativum): While perhaps not a pleasant remedy, garlic is a powerful natural antimicrobial and immune booster. Consuming it raw or in supplemental form can help support the body's defence mechanisms.

🫚Ginger (Zingiber officinale): works on soothing and supporting digestive upsets, nausea and has anti-inflammatory properties. It is wonderful for breaking up excess mucus and supporting circulation.

Remember that rest and hydration—drinking lots of water and perhaps soothing herbal cups of tea 🫖—remain the absolute best foundation for recovery.

I’ve been walking these guys each week as part of my “life balance”!

I’ve missed my shop day since it closed, so I wanted something else to do as well as my clinic time (which I love! I actually LOVE 🧡 my job!)

So I now support the team at Delightful Dogs with exercising, socialising and training some local Doggos.
I love them all! There different personalities and things they like to do. It fills up cup 🏆

What fills yours? Everyone needs different things - I want to know! 😂

What's happening this weekend?

I am desk bound...... upskilling with the latest information with a live streamed conference!

I will be learning more about the benefits of the use of Mushrooms and the history as well as brain protection and neurodegenerative conditions.
Insulin resistance, aging well with nutritional compounds, using high quality ingredients and products and why this is important.
Deeper look at probiotics, including specific conditions to support with these.
Sleeping well - on a deeper brain level.
Some ADHD in children's health and well being, and what the main drivers for this could be.
Then to finish things off tomorrow, we have one of my favourite speakers talking about the exhausted Generation X women! So this will have some pearls of wisdom I am sure!

Ever wondered if your hair holds clues to hidden sensitivities? It might sound surprising, but Hair Sensitivity Testing can help us identify potential food and environmental irritants that could be impacting your wellbeing.

As a Naturopath and Medical Herbalist, I offer Hair Sensitivity Testing to help you uncover these hidden triggers. This can also be a wonderful way to check in with your health and wellbeing, without having to dive too "deep". Its a great place to start with a general "tidy up" and supporting lowering inflammation.

This testing can be particularly helpful if you're experiencing digestive issues like indigestion, heartburn, or bloating, skin problems such as rashes, eczema, or itching, or even headaches, chronic sinus issues, or hayfever. By identifying these sensitivities, we can work together to create a tailored plan to support your health and help you feel your best.

If you're curious to learn more about Hair Sensitivity Testing and how it could benefit you, please get in touch. I'm here to help you on your journey to better health!

I'm finding myself drawn back out into the garden. Yippie!

It feels so good to get my hands into the soil, mixing in that rich, dark compost, and preparing the beds for the coming season.
🥕I’ve already started planting a few things that I know can handle a frost still! And I have popped some things into my wee homemade (Mr Gareth made it!) hothouse. I am experimenting!

🌿There's nothing quite like that feeling of getting a head start on spring and welcoming all that fresh, vibrant energy into the garden.

What are you going to grow this year?

About us.......

WHAT WE DO

A Naturopath or Medical Herbalist will take a full history of your case. This includes your medical history, diet, lifestyle ad any contributing factors that may be influencing your health condition. We may order further tests or use current medical tests to develop a working diagnosis. Then we will produce your personalised wellness plan. We will follow up your case to ensure you receive the full benefits of our service.

A Medical Herbalist uses Liquid Medicinal Herbs and High Potency Vitamins to redress imbalances in the body. Herbs are made up of a wide range of active constituents that work synergistically. We do not isolate single constituents, but recognise the value of whole plant extractions. Herbs have a long history of use, dating back 5000 years. Our clinic also uses Native Rongoa Maori where relevant, thus maintaining a commitment to the Mahi of Aotearoa.
