In light of the high risk posed to our residents by the COVID-19 pandemic we have decided to take the cautious path and go into "lock down".

From Wednesday 18 March onwards visitors will be restricted to immediate family and essential personnel (as determined by management) during set visiting hours.

We are asking all family, friends and whānau to help protect residents and staff in the facility by respecting these restrictions on visitation and taking practical steps to minimise risk exposure.

If you are feeling unwell or have come into contact with anyone who has travelled in the last 14 days or who is self-isolating please do not visit.

We will work with families to explore other ways of keeping in touch with your loved ones, including telephone or video calls, letters or photographs.

If you have any questions, please contact Cardrona on 07 883 3708 or office@cardronahome.co.nz.

We realise that this is a big change but trust that you will all work with us at this time to ensure the safety of your loved ones.

There are a number of people that mean a great deal to me that are very high risk during this period, don't just act for yourself but for all of us. This is a true test for all of us and our communities and our actions right now could save many lives.

Congratulations to our very own Registered Nurse Prescriber

We are very proud of our Clinical Operations Manager, Katherine McLeod, who has recently become a Registered Nurse Prescriber!!

This is a relatively new role in health care and makes excellent use of her years of knowledge and experience for positive health outcomes for our residents, including improved access to treatment and close working relationships with our local medical team.

It is great to recognize the commitment and talent of our senior nurses and in particular Katherine’s commitment to aged care. Innovations like this are essential to ensuring we will be able to contribute towards the growing demand for health care by our aging population and continue to provide the best care possible in the community.

If you see her feel free to ask questions or just say well done!

What makes a happy and healthy life?

Harvard have been running a study on this for over 80 years and have found that overall, most adults seem to get happier as they age.

“The surprising finding is that our relationships and how happy we are in our relationships has a powerful influence on our health,” said Robert Waldinger, director of the study, a psychiatrist at Massachusetts General Hospital and a professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School.

They found that the following traits were common amongst happy participants:

Letting go.

Staying connected.

Getting involved.

Revisiting your childhood.

Buying time and not "things."

Getting some exercise.

Though they only have a small number of the originals, who are in their mid-nineties, left the study will continue with the offspring of the original participants.

What do you think contributes to a good life?

For nearly 80 years, the Harvard Study of Adult Development has been producing data and lessons on how to live longer, happier, and healthier lives.
