⚖️ Today is World Day of Social Justice

Social justice means more than fairness — it means access, dignity, and the right to be understood.

For many people in Aotearoa New Zealand, barriers to communication limit participation in education, healthcare, employment, and community life. When communication needs are unmet, inequities deepen.

Speech-language therapists work alongside individuals, whānau, and communities to reduce these barriers — but real change requires systems that prioritise communication access for all.

👉 Communication is a social justice issue.
Every person deserves the support they need to express themselves, understand others, and fully participate in society.

🎗️ World Cancer Day

Today, we acknowledge and celebrate the strength, resilience, and courage of everyone affected by cancer. We are grateful for the whānau, carers, and health professionals who support people through every step of their journey.

Speech-language therapists often work with people living with head, neck, and other cancers, helping them stay connected, participate fully, and maintain quality of life — whether through managing changes in communication, swallowing, or daily participation.

On World Cancer Day, we stand alongside all those impacted, advocating for services that meet people’s needs and honour their dignity.

🧪✨ World Science Day reminds us that science shapes our world – including how we communicate!

As speech-language therapists, we use evidence-based research to support people with speech, language, and swallowing differences across Aotearoa. Every therapy session, tool, and strategy is grounded in science, helping individuals communicate and participate fully in their communities.

Science + speech = stronger communication for all. 💬💙

Everyone deserves to communicate!

This year's theme, 𝘊𝘦𝘭𝘦𝘣𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘋𝘪𝘧𝘧𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦, shines a spotlight on the many unique ways people express themselves. We are delighted to be showcasing some examples from our community, of stories that celebrate difference, and also the important role SLTs play in supporting people to express themselves.

This submission came from an SLT, Ruth, whose brother, Matt, had SLT support from an early age. This family connection sparked Ruth's interest to train as an SLT when she finished school. A huge thanks to Ruth and Matt for these words 💙

🌟 Share Your Story: Celebrating Difference! 🌟

E koekoe te tūī, e ketekete te kākā, e kūkū te kererū.

We believe that every voice is unique and that diversity in communication enriches our world. As we approach Speech-language Therapy Awareness Week this September, we want to hear your stories of embracing and celebrating differences—whether it’s about a unique way of communicating or the incredible impact of speech and language therapy.

❤ Have you or a loved one experienced a unique communication journey?
💪 How is communication your superpower?
🗣 Have speech and language therapy services made a difference in your life, helping you embrace and celebrate your individuality?
⭐️ Are you an SLT offering speech language therapy services with a difference?

Share your stories with us! Whether it’s a personal experience, a moment of triumph, or a heartfelt message, we want to celebrate the power of diversity and the incredible ways we all express ourselves.

To participate in this celebration of difference, email us with your story - communications@speechtherapy.org.nz. Feel free to include any creative expressions—art, poetry, a video, or even a song! The most creative expression will be awarded a gorgeous prize pack!

We’ll pull together these stories in a series of social media posts during our upcoming SLT Awareness Week – by submitting your story, you give permission for us to share.

Water play can be tremendous fun anyway, but see here how to support your child’s language at the same time!

Water play can be tremendous fun anyway, but see here how to support your child’s language at the same time!

Get outdoors with your preschooler and have fun with water! When you play with water ‘the Hanen Way’, you encourage your preschooler to learn new words and concepts, engage in conversation, and share with other children.
