Supporting Homebirth — Trusting the Journey 💕

we believe birth works best when it’s supported, unrushed, and grounded in trust of the body’s natural physiology.

Home is where many birthing people feel safest — surrounded by familiar sounds, smells, and faces. This sense of comfort isn’t just emotional; it’s **physiological**. When a birthing person feels calm and secure, the body releases oxytocin — the hormone that drives labour, supports effective contractions, reduces stress, and nurtures bonding.

Birth is not something to be controlled — it’s something to be **supported**.

✨ **Why home can be a powerful place to birth:**
• Freedom to move, eat, rest, and labour instinctively
• A calm environment that supports natural hormone flow
• Continuity of care with midwives who know you
• Immediate skin-to-skin, bonding, and gentle newborn transition
• Birth unfolding in a space filled with love and familiarity

Every birth journey is unique, and choice matters. For those who choose homebirth, we are honoured to walk alongside you — protecting physiology, offering skilled care, and holding space with respect and compassion.

Birth is powerful. Birth is intimate. Birth is yours. 🌱

A study found that pregnant women who ate just six dates a day during the four weeks before their due date experienced significant benefits during labor. They arrived at the hospital 74% more dilated, had a 77% shorter first stage of labor, and were 42% less likely to need a caesarean section.

Researchers believe this is because dates contain nutrients that influence oxytocin receptors, helping the cervix and uterus prepare for labor. The fruit enhances the body’s response to oxytocin and other labor-supporting hormones, while also providing natural energy from sugars and fats. Dates are rich in prostaglandins, which help the cervix soften and dilate, as well as serotonin, calcium, and tannins that strengthen uterine contractions.

By stimulating prostaglandin production and improving uterine sensitivity to oxytocin, dates support stronger, more efficient contractions and faster cervical ripening. This combination shortens the first stage of labor and reduces the likelihood of complications that lead to c-sections.

Most experts recommend that women begin eating about six dates a day starting at 37 weeks of pregnancy to support a smoother, more natural labor process.

I need your help! I'm running a short survey (5-10 minutes) as part of my Whine Toa Leadership Programme project, supported by the New Zealand Olympic Committee
"More Than One Bib - Visibility for Mothers in Sport."

This initiative is all about making sure mothers are seen, heard, and supported whether you ski, run, bike, compete at nationals, or are representing on the world stage. Sport is for all of us, at every level.

If you're pregnant, a new mum, or a mother who participates in sport in any way recreational, competitive, or professional, I'd love for you to share your experiences.

Your voice will directly inform a Visibility and Inclusion Toolkit for clubs, sponsors, and organisations to bette support mothers in sport.

Please share with any other mums in your sporting community. The more voices, the stronger the impact.

Huge Welcome to another LMC joining the QT Mountain Midwives team 🥰🥳

Kia ora!

I’m Kate, and I’m so excited to be joining the Mountain Midwives team in just a few weeks — from October 24th — to provide midwifery care under the New Zealand LMC model.

I have a love for movement and connection, and in my spare time you’ll often find me doing yoga, Pilates, hiking, skiing, or swimming. In the past, I’ve worked as a reformer Pilates instructor, rock climbing instructor, and gymnastics coach, and have practiced yoga and Pilates for many years, too. Alongside my midwifery practice, these experiences have given me a deep understanding of the body and a strong belief that movement is medicine.

I’ve been working at Auckland City Hospital, gaining extensive experience supporting high-risk pregnancies and births. I bring this knowledge and skill into my rural practice, allowing me to provide care across the full spectrum of maternity experiences — from normal physiological pregnancy and birth to those requiring secondary care support.

I come originally from a rural part of the North Island, so rural life feels familiar and special to me. I feel truly honoured to be part of such an intimate time in people’s lives, and I can’t wait to build meaningful connections and provide holistic, evidence-based care in Queenstown.

See you soon!

Wondering about breast pumps and whether they're right for you? 🤷‍♀️

We've had plenty of mums come to us with questions about whether to buy one, how it all works, and which type and model to choose.

So, here's a thought - why not loan one from us for a few weeks to see how it works for you and your family before buying one? Our breast pumps can even convert into manual pumps, which is a bonus! 🙌

To find out more or arrange a breast pump loan, get in touch with our peer supporter Kirsten on 021 107 8391 💥
