HE MIHI AROHA ♥️♥️♥️
3 years ago, our marae kōwhaiwhai project started at a hui with whānau and kaiako from Te Wānanga o Aotearoa in Whaingaroa - with a few tips from the amazing Sandy Adsett, iur kai-toi set off on an epic journey. COVID slowed them down a bit - i karawhiu rātou!

These Heke were painted by Rauangi Kaiako and graduates of Te Wānanga o Aotearoa together with the Eketone, Huirama and Wilson whānau . Heramaahina Eketone lead the painting crew Valynda Chadwick, Anja Petford-Neitch, Hineraukura Norris ( Eketone) Stevo Eketone Marewa Severne snd Eleanor Eketone. Marae whānau all had a chance to paint some part of these Heke.

The Tāhuhu was designed and painted by local artist Anja Petford-Neitch, a Maunga Kura Toi Bachelor of Māori Art Graduate.

Before the journey started, our kaumātua & whānau developed a brief for the artists to draw inspiration from. The brief was based in Ngāti Tamainupō whakapapa & kōrero tukuiho, and inspired by the natural beauty of Whaingaroa. Our whenua & ngahere, our manu & ika, our moana & awa, and our renowned winds ‘ngā hau o te Hauāuru’.

It was an honor to spend some time with our talented artists at the marae last night to celebrate this milestone for the marae.
