TODAY IS WORLD MENINGITIS DAY

A global reminder that meningitis can strike anyone, anywhere, at any time.

Meningitis is a medical emergency. Each year, 2.3 million people worldwide are affected, 1 in 5 survivors live with lifelong disabilities, and an estimated 40% of deaths are tamariki under five.

That’s why we must act now.

In our rohe, many tamariki remain unvaccinated against meningococcal disease. Vaccination is the most effective way to protect them, and in Aotearoa it’s free for all under-fives. We all have a role in safeguarding our whānau and strengthening community protection.

Tell your story. Sharing personal experiences of meningitis raises awareness, fosters understanding, and can save lives. Join us and the global community in taking action this World Meningitis Day: https://www.meningitis.org/meningitis-in-your-words

Protect. Support. Defeat.

🛡️ Aotearoa is at very high risk of a measles outbreak. Protecting our tamariki through immunisation is the best defence.🛡️

The MMR vaccine is very effective at preventing measles. Here in the Hokianga, immunity levels are low because not enough people are fully immunised. This puts our community at high risk of an outbreak.

🚐Upcoming Mobile MMR Vaccination Clinic:
📍 Opononi – outside the i-SITE Visitor Information Centre
🗓 Wednesday & Thursday, 8–9 October 2025

If you think your child may have measles, stay home and contact Healthline on 0800 611 116 or call Hauora Hokianga for advice.

🦠 Why this matters:
Measles is one of the most contagious viruses in the world.
It spreads easily through the air and can make people very unwell.
About 1 in 3 people with measles will need hospital care, and it can cause serious health problems.

⚠️ Measles Update for the Hokianga

There is now a confirmed case of measles in the Bay of Islands, and suspected cases closer to home here in the Hokianga.

🛡️ Measles is one of the most contagious diseases in the world. Protecting yourself, your whānau, and our community is especially important right now.

What you can do:

📝 Check your vaccination status – Talk to your doctor or check your child’s Well Child Tamariki Ora book to make sure they’ve had both doses of the MMR vaccine.

✈️Travel considerations – If you are travelling to areas with active measles outbreaks, children from 4 months old can receive an MMR dose.

👀Recognise the symptoms – Fever, cough, runny nose, and sore red eyes. These can look like a cold or flu at first.

📞Stay home & call Healthline – If you or your whānau have these symptoms, or develop a fever and rash, stay home and call Healthline on 0800 611 116 for free advice.

❓Why this matters:

High vaccination rates protect vulnerable groups, including babies too young to be vaccinated and people with weakened immune systems.

A single case can trigger an outbreak if not enough people are immune.
