Thank you to everyone who has donated so far, the appeal is doing really well & we're excited about all the families who will benefit directly from your generosity. 😍💛💝

The key to enjoying retirement goes beyond planning for it financially. It's also about setting up a lifestyle that continues to give you joy, social connection and purpose. For Sue Macklin, that meant taking up volunteering for hospice. 💛💛

Sue volunteers for Harbour Hospice as a community visitor, & also helps in one of our shops, & provides hand and foot massages to patients as part of our Compassionate Touch programme. She says the mahi makes her feel good about herself, plus she's made some great friends along the way.

😊You can watch Sue's video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1iKc7YPcPaw

“Our community’s generosity remains our greatest strength.” - Harbour Hospice Chief Executive Amanda Fowler

It's thanks to you that we can deliver specialist care 365 days a year to one in three people in the community who are dying. Government funding covers around half our annual operational costs and it's your generosity and support that contributes to making up the shortfall.

155 days... that's the average length of time a person is in our care - which might surprise some, who believe we're only there 'right at the end'

“It felt like we were home. We had family all around us, including the grandkids and even the dog. We had a whānau lounge and kitchen and if you needed a break you could go for a walk in the garden or spend time in one of the quiet rooms. It wasn’t just the environment, but the caring nature of everybody at hospice. That made it all so much easier for us.” - DJ

Our Inpatient Unit isn't 'home', but some of the families who've had their person in our care say it can feel close to it. 🩷

“I love how holistic hospice care is. A patient isn’t just a list of symptoms to treat. They’re a whole person who’s lived an exciting and complex life. You look at what’s important to them - spiritually, physically, mentally, within their family and social situation.”

This is what Natasha, a final-year medical student from the University of Nottingham in the UK said about us after completing an elective placement with us. 😊

🎀⭐From all of us here at Harbour Hospice, we wish you and your loved ones a beautiful and peaceful Christmas. 🎀⭐

The past year saw us care for 1434 patients. We made more than 33,000 visits or phone calls and saw a 15% increase in Inpatient admissions. Through it all, your generosity remained our greatest strength. 💝

🎀⭐Thank you for standing with us. Thank you for supporting us. Together, we are ensuring hospice care remains strong, compassionate and accessible for everyone who needs it today and well into the future. Meri Kerihimete.

We understand that Christmas may be especially hard for some this year, and that sadness cannot be "fixed". Still, on Christmas Day we will do our best to bring a touch of Christmas cheer to our Inpatient Units, as a reminder that you and your loved ones are cared for, thought of, and special. ❤️💚💛

Last day today to purchase your collectible Christmas bauble for Hospice from Farmers. This is such a beautiful way to give back to your community, with 100% proceeds going back to your local hospice. 🎄

We're also still here until 5pm today at Silverdale Mall to wrap your gifts for a small donation. Come on down, pick up those last few stocking fillers, and save yourself the hassle of trying to find the end of the cellotape! (Yes, we know the struggle is real!)

Merry Christmas, everybody! Thank you for all your support this year. Arohanui 💝

“Hospice made our lives easier. They phoned all the time and sent their nurses round, who would suggest things that made our lives more comfortable. It was Hospice that applied for a Disabled Parking Permit for us. We hadn’t even thought of that. I don’t know whether I
would have been able to cope much longer if they hadn’t stepped in. My husband never complained but people don’t realise how exhausting it is to look after a loved one.”

- Ever wondered what hospice care looks like? This is what one person had to say.

In 52 years of marriage, Judy and Peter have had all kinds of Christmases. "But what works best for us is keeping things simple,” says Judy.

There’s still a special meal – King salmon (13 minutes in the oven) served with pan-fried veggies; meats, cheeses and desserts - & presents for the grandkids, of course. But when their son told them he loved Christmas at theirs because he could relax, they knew they’d got the formula right. “Christmas for us is just another day, but with a bow," says Judy. 🎀

⭐Judy, Peter and their family are among 500 families who'll be under our care this Christmas. We'll be there for them 24/7 and even on Christmas Day, so they can just concentrate on having a great time with the people they love. 🥰
