How to dilute cleaning products

Why is it important to dilute chemicals?
The “glug-glug” method: we’re probably all aware of this method of mixing cleaning chemicals and concentrates. I know I’ve been guilty of it.

However, this haphazard combining of chemicals without the right knowledge, care and careful pre-measuring is expensive and it’s dangerous. Add to that, cleaning products do not clean as well when they are improperly diluted, making all that hard work pointless.

More is not always better
In fact, based on my experience, it hardly ever is. Using more product than specified can damage surfaces, void warranties, waste money and put those mixing the cleaning products at risk from chemical fumes due to the high concentration of chemicals. On the other hand, over-diluting may see you or your staff waste time and effort.

Dilution rates are there for a reason
Using cleaning liquids effectively isn’t as simple as splattering some cleaning liquid around and wiping it off. Manufacturers set dilution rates for a reason. Cleaning chemicals are formulated to work best at certain dilution ratios. Ignoring directions could be dangerous, costly as well as give poor results.

It’s a common misunderstanding that adding more chemical to the dilution will create a stronger mix to get a better outcome. This is not a good idea for the environment, your wallet or the health of the person doing the cleaning.

Take a surface disinfectant for example. If the directions specify 1:4 ratio or say 10 mls per litre to kill all the viruses listed on the label, what would you accomplish by adding more product? No more germs will be killed, and your floor or surface could in fact become sticky, and streaky. Conversely, cleaning an area with a product that is too diluted could be a waste of time, effort and endanger others as the germs and bacteria won’t have been removed.

Neither scenario is a good one, so always follow your manufacturer’s dilution specifications.

Why choose phosphate free detergents?

What are phosphates and why do we worry about them?
A switch by consumers to phosphate-free detergents could lead to significant improvements in our waterways which are increasingly threatened by phosphate pollution.

Phosphates are chemical compounds containing phosphorus (a naturally occurring mineral) and oxygen, as well as other minerals, such as calcium and sodium. Crucial for plant growth and development, it is estimated that half the world’s food supplies rely on phosphate fertilisers. However, phosphates also affect water quality.

Phosphate pollution in streams, rivers and other waterways leads to big blooms of algae that swamp aquatic plants and starve fish and other water creatures of oxygen. Phosphates feed the algae, which grow out of control, creating imbalances that destroy other life forms and produce harmful toxins.

Phosphate leads to widespread pollution
Excess phosphates create water that's cloudy and low in oxygen. All plants need phosphates to grow, but too many of them in water results in algal blooms which reduce the sunlight available to other plants. When the algae and other plants then die, the bacteria that breaks them down uses the available oxygen in the water, suffocating other aquatic life.

According to the WWF, each kilogram of phosphorus that reaches the sea can produce up to 500 kilograms of algae. As an example quoted on their site, phosphates from detergents are estimated to have contributed between 9 and 24 percent (or 3,000-6,000 tonnes per year) of all anthropogenic phosphorus in the Baltic Sea.

Can cleaning products damage our health?

Your office, retail space, bnb or motel room has just been cleaned. Everything smells wonderful, and everything is sparkling. But do you know what is in the cleaning products that were used, and if they are safe?

It’s an important question to ask, because cleaning products with elevated levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) can be a potential trigger for a number of health issues and are also dangerous to the environment.

What are VOCs?
VOCs are organic chemicals with a high v***r pressure at room temperature. They are potentially harmful pollutants emitted as gases from certain solids or liquids in cleaning products and air fresheners. VOCs have differing levels of toxicity, and not all of them are actually harmful. The danger depends on its toxicity level and the concentration. When used outdoors, VOCs can disperse easily, but in an indoor environment, concentrations can build up and become a health hazard.

What plastic is actually recycled in NZ?

I think we can all agree that plastic waste is one of the greatest environmental challenges facing us and the level of plastic pollution in the oceans is unacceptable.

We waste a lot of stuff
In a world-first study involving the rubbish and recycling bins of 867 New Zealand households nationwide, it was found that Kiwis throw out 1.76 billion plastic containers each year. We are one of the highest waste generators in the world, throwing out an average of 159 grams of plastic every day.

Recycling is not as it seems
Like most Kiwis, I think, I trust that the plastic I throw into the recycling bin will be recycled. Unfortunately, that’s not quite the case. Depending on where you live in the motu, the plastics that you put out in your recycling may or may not be able to be recycled.
New Zealand facilities can only recycle three types of plastic (1,2,5), the other plastics (3, 4, 6, 7 and contaminated plastics) are difficult to recycle and therefore sent to landfills across the nation or exported overseas.

New Zealand does not have the capacity to process all the plastic waste we create. Somewhat ironically, we're not producing enough of it across Aotearoa to have recycling facilities for all plastics in all parts of the country. It just isn’t economical.

Why are paper towels so absorbent?

Interesting facts to absorb
Whether it was to clean a table or dry wet hands, what did you reach for? Was it a paper towel?
As you dried your hands or cleaned up that mess, you’ll have noticed moisture spreading through the paper towel.

What is it about a paper towel that makes it so absorbent?
Paper towels are made up of cellulose fibres, which also make up cotton, wood, and most other plants. They also contain small spaces that both liquid and air can pass through. Capillary action in the fibres draws in the water and the spaces between the fibres then help hold that water.
