Organising Supply Rooms: Guidelines for Cleaning and Efficiency

Keeping your storage areas and supply rooms clean and organised is essential for the smooth functioning of any business. Not only does it enhance efficiency and productivity, but it also ensures a safe and healthy environment for employees and customers alike.

Colour Coding: Simplifying Cleaning Equipment Organisation
One effective way to organize your cleaning equipment is by implementing a colour coding system. Assigning specific colors to different items like mops, brooms, wipes, and other cleaning tools can greatly simplify their identification and usage. Let's take a look at some common colour assignments:
Pink: Bathrooms
Blue: General Cleaning
Green: Food Preparation Areas
Yellow: Clinical Areas

Imagine you run a hotel. By using pink for bathroom cleaning tools, blue for general cleaning, green for food preparation areas, your staff can easily locate the appropriate tools for specific cleaning tasks. This not only saves time but also ensures that the right products are used in each area, maintaining cleanliness and hygiene standards.

Discover the Power of Probiotic Cleaners: The Future of Effective and Eco-Friendly Cleaning

What is a Probiotic Cleaning Product?
As a business owner or manager, you're likely constantly searching for ways to enhance your cleaning processes, not only for better results but also to reduce your environmental impact. Enter probiotic cleaning products – a revolutionary solution that combines the power of science and nature. Probiotic cleaners utilize live beneficial bacteria to clean and protect surfaces, promoting a healthier and safer environment. A probiotic cleaner eats bacteria and creates enzymes to lift the dirt.

What is an Enzyme-Based Cleaning Product?
Enzyme-based cleaning products are another innovative option that can revolutionise your cleaning routine. Enzymes are natural proteins that act as catalysts, breaking down dirt, grime, and stains at a molecular level. By harnessing the power of specific enzymes, these cleaners offer exceptional cleaning performance, even in the toughest situations. Enzymes act like surfactants, lowering surface tension allowing them to lift the soil from the surface.

How Are They Different from Regular Cleaning Products?
Compared to regular cleaning products, probiotic and enzyme-based cleaners offer several distinct advantages. Traditional cleaning products often rely on harsh chemicals and solvents that can be harmful to human health and the environment. In contrast, probiotic and enzyme-based cleaners use nature-inspired ingredients that are gentle, non-toxic, and biodegradable.

Deodourisers - how do they work?

Coming up smelling sweet
We all like to have our homes, offices and workplaces smelling their best. Bad smells such as pets, urine, rubbish, mildew, cooking smells, sweat all waft into the air. So why not use an air freshener to get rid of them? Odours can be masked by a nice floral, lemon or pine scented air freshener.
There are many types of air fresheners available, but not all are created equal and not all are equally appreciated. In fact, the name air freshener is somewhat misleading. Air fresheners don’t actually improve air quality by removing impurities, air fresheners cover up bad odours with perfume.

According to a 2021 study published in the Air Quality, Atmosphere & Health journal, around one in three adults have a reaction to perfumed products, such as air fresheners.

Air fresheners contain ingredients that are associated with various health issues, and constant exposure can well be a cause for concern. Along with headaches, they can cause breathing problems, asthma attacks, skin reactions, runny noses and even cancers. Recent research found a volatile organic compound (VOC) called limonene which is used heavily in air fresheners and scented candles to give a citrus smell is dangerous to inhale on its own and can become formaldehyde when it mixes with other airborne elements. It is most closely linked with cancers of the nose and throat.

Since fragrances can affect so many of us, you would expect ingredients in air fresheners to be listed on labels so we can make informed choices. However, manufacturers often write nothing more detailed than “fragrance” or “parfum”. According to a spokesperson for the International Fragrance Association (IFRA), its members are only committed to disclosing 26 fragrance allergens. Manufacturers could cram as many toxic ingredients as they liked under the umbrella term ‘fragrance,’ without being required to name them specifically.

What do the bubbles in our dishwashing liquids actually do?

What are bubbles and what is the point?
Washing the dishes: it starts with a squeeze of dish soap, a few swishes of the sponge, followed by a water rinse to get off all those soap suds. But what are the bubbles and why are they there?
Those tiny bubbles in the soap suds are created by foaming agents combining with water and air, but what are they doing when I’m washing the dishes, and do I need loads of bubbles?

Essentially, a washing up liquid, which typically contains alkylbenzene sulphonate as the main detergent, foams strongly at first use and then less as the grease concentration increases in the washing-up water.

However, and here’s the crux of the matter, seeing foam doesn’t mean you’re seeing cleaning power in action. Foam itself offers very little in terms of getting the dishes clean, it’s mostly for aesthetic.

Foam does allow the wetting agents, detergents, and degreasers enough time to do their jobs. Foam allows the cleaning detergent to sit on surfaces for longer, helping to pe*****te into grease, oil, fats and other caked on grime. Foam is basically a sidekick to detergents, but grease globules can still slide off the plates if a good wetting agent is present.

So, does foam affect the clean?
Dishwashing liquids use surfactants to clean your dishes. These compounds break down the surface tension of water which makes it a lot easier for it to dissolve things like fat; they allow cleaning agents to pe*****te and dissolve anything on the surface of whatever is being cleaned.
Without suds, people can’t see the soap working, so foam is used as evidence of efficacy, which it is not.

But surfactants and cleaning compounds don’t naturally generate bubbles. Therefore, companies add foaming agents. They believe that we’ll think the dishes are cleaner if we can see bubbles in the sink while we’re washing them.

Television advertisements will often compare the amount of foam in their dishwashing liquid to another to prove that theirs is superior or to imply that the amount of foam reflects the cleaning ability of their product: “with suds that last and last”.

Cleaners and septic tank care

Disinfectant overkill?
You may not have heard of quats, but you’ve definitely come into contact with them.
Quats are registered as pesticides with the Environmental Protection Agency yet are incredibly common and found in household cleaning products such as disinfectants, dishwashing liquids, antibacterial soap, disinfectant sprays and wipes, toilet bowl cleaners, window cleaners, all-purpose cleaners, floor products, laundry detergents, fabric softeners, automatic dishwashing detergents, baby care products, air fresheners, even shampoo: anything that advertises antimicrobial activity or is designed to kill germs.

Quats are the stuff that allows a product to claim to be antibacterial.

Quats do effectively kill many kinds of microbes like E. Coli and Staph. Aureus, but many claim they are total overkill for your everyday cleaning needs and that there are serious potential side effects that come with that killing power.

The use of quats should be avoided, for a number of reasons: the widespread overuse of quats is creating superbugs, bacteria, and fungi with the ability to defeat the drugs designed to kill them, and antibacterials can contribute to asthma, breathing problems, skin irritation and rashes.

Potential harm for septic systems
We’re going to focus on the negative impact quats can on your septic system. Too many harsh chemicals kill the microbes that are essential to the separation of waste in our septic systems, and also end up in the surrounding ecosystems and poison nearby waterways.

How to dilute cleaning products

Why is it important to dilute chemicals?
The “glug-glug” method: we’re probably all aware of this method of mixing cleaning chemicals and concentrates. I know I’ve been guilty of it.

However, this haphazard combining of chemicals without the right knowledge, care and careful pre-measuring is expensive and it’s dangerous. Add to that, cleaning products do not clean as well when they are improperly diluted, making all that hard work pointless.

More is not always better
In fact, based on my experience, it hardly ever is. Using more product than specified can damage surfaces, void warranties, waste money and put those mixing the cleaning products at risk from chemical fumes due to the high concentration of chemicals. On the other hand, over-diluting may see you or your staff waste time and effort.

Dilution rates are there for a reason
Using cleaning liquids effectively isn’t as simple as splattering some cleaning liquid around and wiping it off. Manufacturers set dilution rates for a reason. Cleaning chemicals are formulated to work best at certain dilution ratios. Ignoring directions could be dangerous, costly as well as give poor results.

It’s a common misunderstanding that adding more chemical to the dilution will create a stronger mix to get a better outcome. This is not a good idea for the environment, your wallet or the health of the person doing the cleaning.

Take a surface disinfectant for example. If the directions specify 1:4 ratio or say 10 mls per litre to kill all the viruses listed on the label, what would you accomplish by adding more product? No more germs will be killed, and your floor or surface could in fact become sticky, and streaky. Conversely, cleaning an area with a product that is too diluted could be a waste of time, effort and endanger others as the germs and bacteria won’t have been removed.

Neither scenario is a good one, so always follow your manufacturer’s dilution specifications.
