Looking after your immune system is absolutely key in winter:

- Get enough rest and listen to your body.

Great news for Kiwi living with asthma 🩵

Effective from August 1, those who use a 2-in-1 inhaler to manage their asthma will be able to collect a three-month supply in a single pharmacy visit, rather than returning for repeats every month. The long-awaited change is expected to make a real difference for about 120,000 New Zealanders.

"When you have to visit the pharmacy every month, it becomes a real burden," Foundation Chief Executive Ms Letitia Harding says. "Allowing people to collect three months’ supply at once removes that hurdle and supports better treatment adherence."

This is a major step forward for asthma care in Aotearoa, as it means essential, lifesaving treatment will become more accessible. New Zealand continues to have some of the highest asthma rates in the developed world, so this change has come at a critical time.

EXERCISE SNACKING

Written by our wonderful Better Breathers Class Trainer, Deb Costley

Have you heard of exercise snacking? It’s a term that’s been floating around in the fitness and health industry for a few years now, and it’s a concept I think we should all embrace.

Exercise snacking is the process of incorporating bite-sized workouts into your daily routine. It supports the idea that all movement adds up, and that any exercise is ALWAYS better than none.

Here are some examples of what this could look like for you: do a few extra sit-to-stands each time you get out of a chair, march on the spot during a TV ad break, perform some wall push-ups while waiting for the jug to boil, sneak in some calf raises after brushing your teeth, or add in a 5-minute walk in the morning and again in the afternoon.

This concept helps shift us away from the all or nothing mindset and comes with many benefits. Small bursts of exercise are much easier to fit into a busy schedule. They are also less intimidating if you are new to exercise, recovering from injury or illness, or simply having a low energy day. Often, if you are feeling fatigued and you do an exercise snack, you end up feeling more energised with improved motivation and mood. Small amounts of exercise can also help build confidence to start doing more.

Always remind yourself that every movement counts.

Asthma Awareness Week!

Using a preventer puts you in control.

Preventers help calm your airways and reduce symptoms over time so you can stay well and breathe easier every day, not just by using your reliever during an asthma attack.
If you or someone you love has asthma, talk to a nurse or respiratory educator about if a preventer is right for you.
