Alcohol culture is so normalized we invented "family-friendly bars."

Think about that for a second.

A place where the primary activity
is consuming a substance that alters your state...

and we bring our kids.

Because there's a patio.

Because they serve chicken tenders.

Because there's outdoor seating
and it's "casual."

So we tell ourselves it's fine.

We're not getting drunk.

We're just having a couple.

The kids are playing.

Everyone's having fun.

But here's what's actually happening:

Your kid is watching.

They're watching you order drinks.

They're watching other adults get louder, looser,
less inhibited.

They're watching the progression.

And they're learning something
you're not saying out loud:

This is normal.

Adults go to bars.

Adults drink at lunch.

Adults need alcohol to relax on a Saturday afternoon.

You think you're teaching them
that drinking can be casual.

But what you're actually teaching them
is that alcohol is always present.

It's at restaurants.
It's at parks.
It's at kid birthday parties now.
It's at brunch.
It's at the zoo.

There's nowhere you go
where it's not an option.

And that becomes their baseline.

They don't learn,
"Alcohol is something adults do occasionally."

They learn,
"Alcohol is something adults need everywhere."

So when they're 16
and drinking at a party...

they're not rebelling.

They're doing exactly
what you taught them.

Social situations include alcohol.
Casual hangouts include alcohol.
Good weather includes alcohol.

It's just... always there.

I've worked with thousands of people
who grew up in "moderate drinking" households.

And the pattern is always the same:

Their parents weren't alcoholics.
They weren't abusive.
They just... always had a drink.

At dinner.
At the lake.
At the game.
At family gatherings.

And now as adults?

They can't imagine
a social situation without it either.

Not because they're addicted.

Because it was always the baseline.

That's what "family-friendly bars" teach.

Dependency.

Family-friendly bars don't exist...

Nutrient rich, safe foods meal prep for the baby who still canโ€™t have any of his allergy foods and isnโ€™t crazy for textures ๐Ÿ˜ฎโ€๐Ÿ’จ is the third child easyโ€ฆ. Yes and no.
Homekill beef, store bought tomatoes, homegrown carrots potatoes pumpkin Silverbeet kale cabbage, herbs and rice.
No legumes this time round, the poor boy eats them nearly everyday ๐Ÿซ˜

Heโ€™s not crazy for chicken or anything super chewy like steak or chopsโ€ฆ. But the man has loved his mince since the first time we introduced it to him! He loves it, it doesnโ€™t try to kill him (anaphylactic), texture is perfect. Itโ€™s his favourite safe food and if you know mr sir you know he hasnโ€™t got a lot and we struggle a lot of the time with them. Also thank you GG for always having his mince in freezer when we go round to yours or a pot on the stove ready for him xx

How it all started...

A 21 year old mum to my gorgeous daughter Scarlett and we are both deeply in love with my partner Nick

April 1st 2017 was moving day and we had one go to pack everything in the hired trailer and our two cars... along with 1 cat and a bunny. My mums dog quickly joined our home within a month of us moving in and since then we have acquired 4 chickens, a lamb and another cat... I'm still working on getting a pig but with the MULTIPLE times of asking Nick its always a very clear โ€œNo mickenziโ€.... I'm not giving up though, heโ€™ll give in one day ;)

Long story short, I got pregnant again and let me tell you!!!!... it was not an easy road wow. Got diagnosed with Post Natal Depression, OCD and anxiety.. on top of that I had two miscarriages, a few vaginal surgeries and nearly the whole of the Ashburton and Christchurch Doctors practices, emergency rooms, Gynaecologists and obstetricians who have seen or felt my down stairs... (not the whole of that area but it sure felt like it..) But a miracle happened and I'm happy and healthy again and feeling like a baby elephant with this pregnancy so all is good again and we will be welcoming our wee rainbow baby into this world in July!

So yeah, I'm stuck down south and I'm a pregnant, stay at home mum who is sad to say that she has very little friends where we live and had been locking herself inside with the feeling of boredom...Well a few months back my Grandma who I dearly love and consider to be my best friend rang me and smacked me in the face (metaphorically) with words of encouragement and said to get outside!!!! Haha so in no way was I going to argue with the lady and I dressed my mini me up warm (we were heading into a cold winter) and walked outside and starting pondering round kicking stones and talking to Scarlett who would respond back with gibberish, but hey I wasn't fussy with who i spoke to in this lonely time. While looking at plants I had never seen in my life we walked into a overgrown raised vegetable bed. I kinda stood there and pouted my lips and thought โ€œokay, I'm really good at vegetable gardening so why not save some money by growing food to feed to my family and it might also pass some time?โ€
