A standard appointment is 15 minutes and is designed for one person to talk through one or two concerns.

If you have a few topics you’d like to cover, please book a double appointment so we have time to address everything properly.
And if more than one family member needs to be seen, each person will need their own appointment slot.

Thank you for helping us keep appointments running smoothly — it means we can care for everyone more effectively.

Changes to Breast Screening Eligibility: The age for free breast screening is being extended

Free mammograms are currently offered to women between the ages of 45 to 69 every 2 years.

From October 2025 the age for free breast screening will start to be extended across Aotearoa New Zealand (apart from Nelson and Marlborough, which started as a pilot district in October 2024).

Extending the age to include all women up to the age of 74 will be fully in place by the end of 2029. Phasing in each age group over 4 years will allow breast screening and cancer treatment services to meet the additional demand.

From October 2025 the age extension for further breast screening begins with women in the 2 age groups of 70 and 74.

What the national age extension means for you

If you turn 70 on or after 1 October 2025, you are eligible for free mammograms every 2 years (from your last screen) until aged 75.

If you are 70 to 74 before 1 October 2025, you are eligible for one final screen at age 74 if booked before turning 75.

Getting Uni Student & Childhood Immunisations up to date over the holiday period:

If you’re sending your teens off to university or boarding school next year, it’s a good idea to ensure they are up to date with their immunisations.

Adults aged 25 or under who live in close-living environments—such as university halls & boarding schools are at greater risk of contracting meningococcal disease.

Meningococcal disease is an infection caused by bacteria. The disease is spread in similar ways to the common cold — by coughing and sneezing, or by contact with saliva (spit) and can lead to two very serious illnesses: “Meningitis” — an infection of the membranes that cover the brain and spinal cord and “Septicaemia” — blood poisoning. Meningococcal disease can develop rapidly and be life-threatening. It can become deadly in just a few hours. People who survive meningococcal disease often have serious long-term effects, including amputation of limbs, hearing loss, seizures, brain injury, and permanent skin scarring.

The meningococcal vaccines protect against the bacteria that cause meningococcal disease. MenB and MenACWY vaccines are available for people 13 to 25 years old in certain close-living situations.

More information about the Meningococcal vaccines and eligibility can be found here: https://info.health.nz/immunisations/vaccines-aotearoa/meningococcal-vaccine

The prolonged prescriptions system is due to become active in late Feb 2026.

If you feel you might be suitable for 6 or 12-month prescriptions, you will need to book a Safe Prescribing Assessment with your usual Dr.

Please note, they will only agree to this if it is felt to be safe and appropriate for you and your medical conditions.

Aotearoa New Zealand is at very high risk of a measles outbreak.
Measles spreads very quickly and can cause serious complications.
Please be aware of measles symptoms, including fever, cough, runny nose, sore/red eyes and rash.
If you have any of these symptoms and you are visiting the practice, you may be asked to please wait in your car.

Checking your Measles Immunity:
To be considered immune to measles, you will need to have had two “Measles, Mumps & Rubella” (MMR) vaccines at least one month apart. Everyone should check whether they have had 2 doses of the MMR vaccine.

There are a few different ways you can check someone’s immunisation status:
1. Check their Well Child or Plunket book.
2. View their immunisation history through our patient portal Myindici.
3. Through the Te Whatu Ora My Health Account: https://identity.health.nz/

If you know that you have had two MMR vaccinations, you do not need additional vaccines as an adult — you are fully protected.

If you are not immune:
If you have not had two MMR vaccines it is recommended you have 2 MMR vaccinations, 1 month apart. For adults over 18 years old, MMR vaccination is free if you are a New Zealand resident, or eligible for free healthcare.

If you are not immune and have been exposed to measles, MMR vaccination within 72 hours of exposure may provide protection and help limit the spread.

Getting vaccinated can help to protect yourself and your loved ones from catching and spreading measles.

💜 World Sanfilipo Awareness Day is on November 16th, which is about spreading awareness and sparking conversations globally about Sanfilippo Syndrome, a disease few have heard of.

💜 This special day of Awareness is in honour of the children around the world living with Sanfilippo Syndrome today, and those who have passed away. It also honours the families of these precious children.

💜 Sanfilippo Syndrome is a rapidly degenerative and fatal disease in children causing severe dementia, currently with no cure and no treatment options. Learn more about Sanfilippo Syndrome, its causes, its symptoms, current research, and how families and foundations are helping fund research for a cure:
https://curesanfilippofoundation.org/

💜 Raising awareness of Sanfilipo is a cause close to our hearts at Ranolf Medical Centre as one of our close neighbour's is directly affected by this condition.
Ollie Schimanski lives with this debilitating rare condition, similar to childhood dementia. His family shares their positive approach dealing with one of life’s hardest challenges in this video:
https://youtu.be/IUdEW2C78oc?si=sRLWBVvDBPgaaZmG

💜 We will have a donation box in reception for the week of Monday 17th November and will pass any donations onto the Sanfilipo Foundation. If you would like to support the cause, you can either pop in and drop of your donation to us or donate directly online:

Gumboot Friday is the main fundraising event for the I AM HOPE foundation who provide free counselling for people aged 25 and under. Who should consider getting an MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubelle) vaccination?:‍
- 70 years or older do not need MMR vaccine
- Mid-50s and 60s are very unlikely to need a vaccine, but it can be considered if necessary e.g travelling to high-risk countries
- Adults up to mid-50s People aged younger than mid-50s need MMR if they do not have a clear record of two doses of measles containing vaccine or confirmed measles.

Vaccination is your best protection - two doses of the MMR vaccine protect 99% of people and is free for most in NZ.
