There's a Finnish word that doesn't quite translate: löyly (pronounced 'low-loo').
It's the wave of steam that rises when you pour water onto hot stones. But ask any Finn and they'll tell you it's more than that. Löyly is the soul of the sauna. The breath of the room. The moment everyone stops talking.
I grew up with it. My mother — the Maire our 6-person sauna is named after — taught me that good löyly is gentle, not violent. Small ladles, often. Not one big splash.
If you've only ever been in a sauna where someone tipped a whole bucket on the stones at once, you've never really met löyly. Come into the Rotorua showroom and we'll show you.
