Ko te reo Māori te taonga tuku iho, ko te reo o ngā tūpuna, te reo o te whenua. I te wā kua pahure, i heke te reo, i raru, i ngaro, engari i tēnei wā, ka whakahokia, ka ora anō te reo Māori.

Thanks to Ngā Kete Waiora Piringa now has regular te reo rangatira classes, celebrating Te Wiki o Te Reo this week especially but blessed it’s also what we do every week within Piringa; with Poutiri Wellness Centre

This year has been such an eye-opener for me. I realised how often I was treating joy like it was something I had to earn, something that came after the mahi was done, after the house was in order, after I had been “good enough.” But that’s not how joy works. Joy isn’t a prize waiting at the finish line. Joy is something we all deserve, simply because we’re here, alive, carrying our whakapapa and mauri with us.

I used to think I didn’t have time for joy. I’d tell myself: I’ll laugh more when things calm down. I’ll relax when the mahi slows down. I’ll enjoy myself once the stress is over. But you know what? That day never really comes. Life is always full. What I’ve learnt is that joy doesn’t need to be scheduled, it needs to be chosen.

This year I started noticing the small things again. The belly laughter that spills out of my tamāhine and fills the house. The moments when I get lost in a passion project and remember what it feels like to create from the heart. The silly conversations, the music playing too loud in the car, the way connection can turn an ordinary afternoon into something special. These aren’t “extra” moments, they are the rongoa.

As Māori, we know hauora isn’t just about surviving. It’s about thriving, finding balance in our wairua, hinengaro, tinana, and whānau. Joy strengthens each of these. Joy is part of how we restore mauri. Yet, in the busyness of motherhood, mahi, and responsibilities, it’s so easy to forget. It’s easy to lose yourself in the weight of everything, to scroll endlessly, to feel like you’re carrying the load alone. I’ve been there. I know what it feels like when laughter feels like a stranger.

Slowly, I’ve found my way back. It wasn’t through waiting for everything to be perfect, it was through deciding that joy mattered enough to make space for it. To let myself pause. To let myself be silly. To dance in the kitchen even when the dishes were piled high. To put down the phone and sit in the sun. To remember that joy isn’t something you earn once you’ve “done enough.” It’s something you allow yourself every single day.

So this is my reminder, from my heart to yours: joy is not a luxury, it’s a birthright. We all deserve it. You deserve it. You deserve to laugh, to breathe freely, to reconnect with what lights you up.

How are you choosing joy this week? What small moments bring you back to yourself?
