When Robert’s father died, he thought he knew his dad’s story.
But during the funeral, friends and neighbours shared memories he’d never heard — stories of quiet kindness, service, and laughter that painted a fuller picture of the man he loved.

That’s what a funeral can do — help us see someone’s life through the eyes of those they touched, and bring comfort through shared memories.

When someone we love passes away, it can be difficult to find the right words to express sympathy, love, and remembrance.

Flowers that hold special significance can help in expressing our feelings, from lilies symbolising peace and purity or roses representing love and admiration, to your loved ones favourite flower, each flower tells a story. Selecting meaningful floral tributes is great way to honour your loved one.

Unclaimed, But Never Forgotten 💛

At Osbornes, we don’t just hold ashes - we hold stories, memories, and the quiet weight of lives once lived.

Over the years, we’ve gently cared for the ashes of loved ones that remain unclaimed, whether in our care or from previous funeral homes - each one deserving of dignity and remembrance.

A recent article in the NZ Herald brought national attention to this tender reality: across Aotearoa, funeral homes are quietly entrusted with the care of thousands of unclaimed ashes.

There are many reasons why ashes may go uncollected. Families may have moved away, lost contact, or faced personal challenges. In some cases, grief or uncertainty has made it difficult to decide on a final resting place.

What never changes is our unwavering commitment to safeguard every individual entrusted to us, for as long as needed, until families are ready.

This is an open invitation to reconnect, to remember, and, when the time feels right, to reclaim.

As Rotorua's longest serving funeral home, we may be able to help you with finding ashes that were with local funeral homes who are no longer operating. If you believe we may be caring for the ashes of someone dear to you, we warmly encourage you to get in touch.

Together, we can ensure that every life is honoured with the care, dignity, and love they deserve.
