Te Ngae Medical Centre Te Ngae Medical Centre is a family friendly medical practice situated in the Redwood Centre on Te Ngae Road. TNMC is Cornerstone accredited.

Te Ngae Medical Centre started off in a little house on Owhata Road. In early 2013 the practice moved to their current, purpose built rooms in the new Redwood Centre on Te Ngae Road. Te Ngae Medical has a group of 6 Doctors supported by an experienced team of nursing and administration staff. TNMC also provide a teaching service for the Royal College of General Practitioners and GP registrars work alongside the GP's for a 6 month attachment.

Staff News

We are unfortunately saying goodbye to our Registrar GP, Dr. Holly Wilson next month, she has been with us since January this year and has been a great addition to our team. We do wish her well for the future, and hope to see her again soon!

Influenza Vaccinations

Our nurses are available to offer vaccinations to all our patients who are wanting to get influenza vaccinations this season. From 1st July free flu vaccinations will be extended to:

• Children aged 3-12 years
• People with serious mental health or addiction needs.

Free flu shots are already available for a large group of people including pregnant people, over 65 year olds, Maori and Pasifika aged 55 plus, and people with underlying health conditions. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the team on tengaenurses@raphs.org.nz.

Healthy Heart Checks

You can undergo a heart risk assessment with your GP or nurse. They can calculate your risk of a stroke or heart attack based on your age, medical history and other risk factors. They can also advise how often you need a heart risk assessment.

Seeing your GP or nurse is the best way to find out your heart health as they know how to manage your condition. All enrolled patients are offered regular cardiovascular disease checks free of charge. Our staff will be sending out text reminders to ensure these checks are completed, particularly those who are high risk patients.

COVID Boosters

The second COVID-19 booster is available for everyone 50 years and older, and health, aged-care and disability-care workers over the age of 30 once six months has passed since a previous dose. The second dose is recommended six months since their previous for:

• People aged 65 years and over.
• Māori and Pacific peoples aged 50 years and over.
• Residents of aged-care and disability-care facilities.
• Severely immunocompromised people who received a three-dose primary course and a fourth dose as a first booster (noting this would be a fifth dose for these people).
• People aged 16 years and over who have a medical condition that increases the risk of severe breakthrough COVID-19 illness.
• Disabled people aged 16 years and over with significant or complex health needs or multiple comorbidities that increase the risk of poor outcomes from COVID-19.
• If you have COVID-19 recently you should delay your next scheduled COVID-19 vaccination for three months, however there is no need to defer your flu vaccination.

Meningococcal Disease

Meningococcal disease is caused by a bacterial infection and can cause serious health concerns. It can affect anyone – but it’s more common in children under the age of 5, teenagers, and young adults. Students in their first year of tertiary education living in student accommodation may also be at higher risk. The Meningococcal vaccine is fully funded for individuals aged 13-25 inclusively or are in their first year of living in boarding school hostels, tertiary education halls of residence. They are also available for private purchase. It’s important to know the signs and symptoms of meningococcal disease because it can develop very quickly. It can be treated with antibiotics, but early treatment is very important. If you notice any of the symptoms of meningococcal disease or have any other concerns, contact your doctor without delay – or call Healthline free on 0800 611 116 at any hour of the day or night, even if you have already been seen by a health professional. Please contact our Practice Nurses to discuss eligibility, costs and dosing schedules.

Aero and Accession

We have reopened the ability to book appointments through our online portal. Our standard appointments are 15 minute consults, so if you would like a longer appointment or needing a specific type, i.e. minor surgery, driver’s license, pilot medicals, diabetic annual review, smears, ear syringes or 6-week immunisation, please phone the practice on 07 345 6627. We do also ask when using this service, you book your consult with the GP you are enrolled with.

Quality Improvement

To ensure we are continually offering the best services to our patients, we often hold focus groups within the practice to ensure any issues, ideas and new guidelines are discussed on a regular basis. If you would like to know more, or have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the Practice Manager on chris.fyfe@raphs.org.nz.

Health Improvement Practitioner

Anna is our Health Improvement Practitioner who is based at Te Ngae Medical Centre on a Tuesday and Wednesday from 8.45am to 4.00pm.
Her role here at the practice is to assist people with any issues with illness or stress that are impacting on health. Sessions are 30 minutes and are free, if you would like to book in to see Anna, please contact admin on 07 345 6627.

Operational Update

We have recently switched our entrance and reception area to a one way system to reduce the risk of infection within the practice. Since the recent red level we have had a staff member greeting our patients on entering, however we will now be completing this from the reception desk, if you have any questions or concerns in regards to this, please do not hesitate to contact us.
Following on from this change, we would like to remind our patients, the urgent clinic is no longer a drop in clinic, please ensure you phone prior to coming into the practice. The reason for this is so we can protect our staff and other patients from the risk of infection, and may mean we see patients in different areas of the practice. The phone number to ring is 07 345 6627, and we open up our phone lines from 8.00am each morning.

Vaccinations

The Ministry is concerned about the risk of flu and measles this winter given the impact of COVID 19 pandemic. Also with borders re-opening, a few more cases of flu and measles will be expected this year. With this, the need for flu, infant and childhood vaccinations are particularly necessary, especially as we head into winter. These are also especially important for those who are pregnant.

Public Holidays

We are closed on both Queens Birthday, Monday 6th June and Matariki, Friday 24th June. If you have any repeat prescriptions which are needed or would like to order prescriptions, please ensure these are done in plenty of time. You can also order these through Aero or Accession, however if there are any questions or concerns, our clinic team may give you a call to discuss prior to sending to the pharmacy of your choice.

Staff News

We are unfortunately saying goodbye to Renate this month, one of our administration team members. She has been with us for the past 10 years, but we do wish her well for the future. We are delighted to welcome Dannielle to the team next month as her replacement and she is looking forward to meeting all our patients
shortly. We are also welcoming Tuara to our team in early May as our new Health Care Assistant. We have had this position unfilled for a few months so we are delighted to welcome Tuara.

Influenza Vaccines

We have staff available to offer influenza vaccinations from 1st April 2022. If you would like to book in for this, please contact admin on 07 345 6627 or email tengaeadmin@raphs.org.nz for an appointment.
Eligibility criteria for FREE seasonal influenza vaccination for 2022:
• pregnant people
• people aged 65 years and older
• Māori and Pacific peoples aged 55 to 64 years
• people aged 6 months to under 65 years with eligible conditions
• tamariki aged 4 years or under who have been hospitalised for respiratory illness (including measles) or have a history of significant respiratory illness. If you are unsure if you qualify, please give us a call to discuss.

Parliament recently passed a law allowing Matariki, the Maori New Year to become a public holiday. This date will be 24th June this year, and we will be closed on this date.

RAT Testing

Rapid antigen tests (RATs) are New Zealand’s primary testing tool for people with COVID-19 symptoms or household contacts. You should report the results of your rapid antigen test (RAT) whether you test positive or negative.
You can do this online through My COVID Record.

 Follow the steps.
If you are having trouble using My COVID Record, you can report the results of your RAT over the phone by calling 0800 222 478 and choose option 3.

Appointment Availability

This section is a repeat of last month’s newsletter, however it is important to continue keeping our patients informed of this:
Due to the continued staff challenges and managing increased spread of positive COVID cases in the local community there may be a time when the doctor you are enrolled with is unavailable. This may happen in advance, or on the day. In this case, we will contact you as soon as we know and work out a plan with you. If we have another doctor available we will change your appointment time, or alternatively we will discuss other options with you. We do ask for your understanding and flexibility if this happens, as our resources may be a little less than usual and we may need to prioritise appointments. Please be assured though, we will always be able to offer care and support to our patients and this is our top priority. Please consider if virtual consults will work for you and phone as usual to book this. If you have questions about COVID we have a dedicated nurse you can speak to. Please ask administration to put you through if you would like to chat. After hours, Health Line is the number to phone: 0800 611 116.

March 2022 Newsletter

Omicron Update

With the spread of Omicron in our community, and phase 3 now in place for New Zealand, the practice has been putting procedures and strategies in place to ensure we provide the best services and care for our patients. We would like to communicate a few things we have put into place for the coming months through this Omicron outbreak.

COVID Vaccinations

We have now got a number of staff who are trained to offer COVID vaccinations and boosters to our patients. If you are interested in receiving this through the practice, please contact the admin team on 07 345 6627. We do believe vaccinations are the best defense
against the spread of COVID, however if you would like to discuss this in more detail, please contact us.

RAT testing

Regarding availability of RAT tests. At this point, the Ministry of Health guidelines are patients are required to still access these through testing sites in the region. Our closest one is at Copthorne Hotel with the entrance to this on Ward St. We will let patients know as soon as we can when we are able to offer this to our patients.

Practice News

Staffing

We welcome a new Associate Doctor to the practice, Dr. Emma McCallum who has officially joined us last month. She was a Registrar with us recently, and we are delighted she has joined our team. We are also delighted to welcome Dr. Holly Wilson, our current Registrar. She will be with us through to August this year and is looking forward to meeting our patients soon.

Aero and Accession

We have recently upgraded these services due to an increase in security settings needed. As a result, all patients will need to re-register with the practice for login details. We do apologise for the inconvenience, however if you do have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us. We currently do not have the ability to book appointments through this app due to the Omicron outbreak, but will let you know when this function is turned on again.

Public Holidays

We are closed on the following days: Good Friday, Friday 15th April, and Easter Monday, Monday 18th April. We are also closed on Monday 25th April for ANZAC Day. Staffing Update

We are unfortunately saying goodbye to one of our amazing nursing team this month. Debbie joined us a few months ago and has made a big impact on the team, and we are sorry to see her go however we do wish her well for the future. However we are excited to be joined by Jezreel Tijing in January, who is looking forward to meeting all our staff and patients soon.

Health Improvement Practitioner

We have recently had a change of staff in this role and now joined by Anna Evans, who works every Tuesday and Wednesday in the practice between 8.45am and 4pm. She is a registered Occupational Therapist with 20 years’ experience in working with people to improve their lives following illness or injury and her role here at the practice is to assist people with any issues with illness or stress that are impacting on health. Sessions are 30 minutes and are free and can be booked in with reception on 07 345 6627.

Christmas and New Year’s Hours

We will be closed on the following stat days: Monday 27th December 2021, Tuesday 28th December 2021 as well as Monday 3rd January 2022 and Tuesday 4th January 2022. If you are requiring medications or prescriptions over this time, please ensure you order these in plenty of time. Email tengaenurses@raphs.org.nz to order these.
In addition to the above dates, there will be no Pathlab services available on the following dates at Te Ngae:
Thursday 23rd and Friday 24th December 2021;
Wednesday 29th, Thursday 30th and Friday 31st December 2021;
Wednesday 5th, Thursday 6th and Friday 7th January 2022.

Accession and Aero

Unfortunately these services are still undergoing maintenance and are not available at this time, we do apologise for the delay in this, however it is a priority to get these going very soon.

COVID Update

With guidance from the College of GP’s, our professional body we have changed our procedures to minimise the risk of infection to both our staff and other patients from COVID 19.
When booking an appointment, we currently screen our patients in regards to any respiratory symptoms they may have, and following the advice from the college, we are now asking patients their vaccination status and any exemptions they hold.
This will not reduce the level of care we provide, and we will ensure you are given the best care from the practice, however it may change the way you are seen.

Due to the consistent changes in COVID 19 management, we may change the way we do things, however please be assured, patient care is our main focus and priority. We will communicate these
as soon as we can, however please keep an eye on our website page for up to date information.

September Newsletter

COVID Update

As we have moved to level 2, our practice have reopened the doors, however we do have restrictions in place due to the Delta variant. All patients will be contacted prior to the appointment and be offered a virtual consult. If you decide you would rather be seen in the practice, please remain in your car on arrival to your appointment and phone us on 07 345 6627 to let us know you are here. From there we will let you know the process, we may ask you to wait in the car until your appointment time. Please ensure you bring a mask with you to your appointment, as we do require all staff and patients to be wearing masks at all times. Please also ensure if you are planning on coming to the practice for any reason, you phone us beforehand, and discuss your plans, as it can may be done virtually. We do appreciate your understanding during this time, we need to ensure our staff, patients and community are protected thank you.

Routine Appointments

As we have moved to level 2, the practice is now open and can offer our normal services, including diabetic annual reviews, smear appointments, and routine blood tests. The administration team will be sending out communication in the coming weeks to follow up on outstanding appointments and ensure these are booked in for you. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us at tengaenurses@raphs.org.nz Pathlab will not be available at Te Ngae until Monday 13th September.
